The Specialized Telecommunication Assistance Program (STAP) is a voucher program that can assist with the purchase of telephone equipment to access telephone services for residents of Texas who have a disability that limits their ability to use the telephone. The program can be accessed once every five years for equipment. The vouchers are available to all who qualify for their service, regardless of income.

A friend of mine received her free phone in December and mine is scheduled to arrive this week. We got the Ameriphone XL 25S, which amplifies the outgoing voice up to 18 decibels. I can’t wait to try it!

Other states may have similar programs.

Dear Lori:

Thanks for this useful post. I hope that the phone equipment will be helpful to you. All of us with SD are well aware of the problems associated with speaking on the phone. There are a number of threads on related topics which can be found in the archives section of this popular bulletin board.

Sincerely,

Thanks Mary,

It's always so good to hear from you. I absolutely loved talking to you at the recent Annual SD Symposium in Salt Lake City.

When I get my phone, I'll try to post a picture if that's allowed.

Through this program, every SD patient in Texas should have a new phone to help improve their communication.

I'll keep you posted.
