Hi everyone, i was wondering how good botox is it? Is it as good as the effect alcohol has on SD? After i've had a couple of drinks my voice gets super smooth, i wold say like 98% normal. I just wanted to know if botox makes your voices sound as good as after having a few drinks. I would love to have that same voice when i get my shots and of course i would like for the effect to last more that 3 hours..:-)

Alcohol helps me the same about 98% smooth. And yes the effects dont last but to enhance my voice afterwards alittle.
I have had botox. The thing with botox is that the side effects for me arent good. I am hoarse, whispery and breathy for about 4-8 weeks depending on the dose injected. I am trying to keep lowering the dose to get it right. But, the lower the dose the more often you need the shot.
I would say I sound smooth after the side effects where off. Yes I do. Side effects first....lasting 4-8 weeks, than good voice for about 4- 5 months, than back to injections. I have to add with the side effects I DONT have a shaky voice at all. I sound smooth but raspy, breathy, hoarse.
Thats the deal for me
Lets hear more input from others on WINE!! lol

I work for the alcohol and substance abuse center at a local university - I wonder if I could get permission to have a couple of glasses of wine before I go to work. hmmm

I too use wine to relax my vocal cords. Enjoyed your humor about this. Here's to you. Is wine the best or do other liquors help? I vote for wine.

Alcohol really used to help my speech before DBS. But since DBS it does not seem to work as well both on my speech and on my Dystonia in general.

PS I use NexyUpTalker software to help me communicate at work and I do an awful lot of text messaging, IMing and emailing. Thank god my fingers still work :)

Hey, I wholeheartedly agree with this thread!
I've had Botox, and sometimes it works great the next day, while other times I'm also breathy for a few weeks.
As for the alcohol - wine, rum & coke, White Russians, or Starbucks liqueur mixed with iced coffee - any are helpful, especially after a long day teaching ungrateful teenagers. Wouldn't it be nice to be able to use this "cure" before work, rather than just after?
No, I'm not an alcoholic - just a tired teacher at the end of a very rough year.

Wow. I've given up on botox... for now anyway. Maybe I just need to get liquored up! I don't know if it helps me or not because I rarely drink. Maybe we should all do a collective experiment and see what happens when we get bombed. Totally for the sake of science, of course.

Botox results can be inconsistent. One shot can work well and the very next shot not work very well. However, it is recognized as the best form of treatment for most. A botox shot can last anywhere from 6 weeks to 6 months. I'm told the average Botox shot lasts about 3 months. And that 3 months does include a temporary breathy period that wears off.
