With the previous discussions about beer and wine and breathing techniques, I wondered if anyone had tried and had any success with hypnosis. Since my diagnosis is MTD and not SD I wonder if it would help.
Thoughts?
Sybil

I had wondered this myself but just never tried it. I have MTD along with the SD. Does yours cause you pain from those muscles being tight? Mine sure does and I'm constantly trying to loosen my jaw muscles and relax everything.

No, I don't have any pain. Although people ask me all the time if it hurts. It must just sound painful.
I will do some more exploring with the hypnosis idea. Frankly, I'd try about anything.

Answering the question about trying acupuncture for AD/SD:

I have tried acupuncture. By itself, it did just about nothing. But when I combined acupuncture with Botox, it extended the duration between shots quite a bit. I could not begin to even guess why this happened.

Hmmm, I guess my pain then must be related more to my peripheral neuropathy since it causes pain everywhere else. That must be why the doctors couldn't figure it out.

I have mixed SD and live in Perth, Western Australia. I did try acupuncture every day for 30 days. The Acapuncturist was a Chinese doctor and I believe very helpful. Part of the process was applying a type of stimulation on my forehead and was quite painful. One night during the course of my treatment I went out for dinner and actually experienced lovely smooth speech all night in a noisy restaurant! Unfortuantely I did not experience that again and after going every day for 6 days per week for 4 weeks at $80 per visit I gave up. I was starting to feel like a pin cushion. I am waiting to have a Botox injection so am most intrigued to read Mdubovick's comment - maybe I shall give that a try again to see if it will help sustain the Botox.

Hi I was sent by the hospital for hypnotherapy when I was under the "its all in your head diagnosis" nearly 10 years ago. It did nothing. They suggested crystal healing as well but I passed on that one.
I do use hypnotherapy tapes daily at home for relaxation they dont help my voice either.
I have to say that neither does alchohol.

I also tried hypnosis when they thought it was all in my head about 10 years ago. The guy gave me some words to repeat like "Lavendar", hewqihewqo oops fell asleep on my keyboard, "Letting go" oihdsoihfoih, I'm back again...and "Loosening" 9ry3wiwqoir but it didn't do anything. :-)

Actually the guy got my pulse really low, in the 40s or something, then his pager went off and startled me. Nice job Hypnotist. He probably has a show in Vegas now or something.

On another note alcohol used to always help me with my AD-SD symptoms. Recently I have developed more of a tremor and a feeling of Muscular tension. Alcohol doesn't help one bit now which leads me to believe I have developed MTD...since Dr. Captain Mogan doesn't help anymore I guess I can cut back on my drinking.

Adam, I would think that if you have MTD now that the alcohol would help more since it relaxes muscles! Alcohol used to help me but the SD has gotten a little worse so I just noticed at dinner last night while sipping a glass of wine that it didn't make any difference.

Hmmm, I thought from reading other posts that MTD usually isn't helped from alcohol, but SD is. All I know is this is a completely different feeling in my throat than I have ever had. The Dr. tells me it is mainly tremor that is giving me the difficulty but everything muscle in my throat/head seems to be straining when I talk. I don't feel the constant breaks as much as before I had SLAD-R surgery, it's more of just a strained and strangled feeling.

It has coincided with the longest time without botox that I have had. My last injection was about a year ago. I'm wondering if my throat started to try to compensate for feeling the spasms again and started to use other muscles causing this strain...there I go with my self diagnosis again :-)

Like I said though, up until about 6 months ago if I had a few drinks my voice would feel pretty good. Now it doesn't help at all...I'm pretty frustrated.

I tried a botox injection in the normal vocal cord muscle again last Tuesday, but I think I swallowed when he was injecting it and it didn't get where it was supposed to go. Right now I am just whispering for a couple days because I can't take the strain.
