I received Botox injections for two years that worked wonderfully. My doctor left my area (San Diego) and went to Texas. I have had three treatments with the doctor that has taken over and they have had absolutely no effect on my voice. I am getting very frustrated. They keep telling me to come back and try again, but I am wondering at what point do I give up? The doctor is new to this procedure and I keep thinking it will get better, but so far it hasn't. Will insurance typically cover an out of area doctor if I am not getting results? |

Who was the doctor that moved from California to Texas? The best place to look for medical professionals (ENT doctor, neurologist, speech therapist, etc.) with experience diagnosing and treating SD or other voice disorders is the NSDA website at www.dysphonia.org and then click on the Healthcare Referrals link on the top menu. There's also a link to the NSDA site at the top of this SD bulletin board page. Good luck! Lori

My Dr. that moved to Texas (Houston), was Dr. Thekdi from UCSD. After what I have been through since, I realize how wonderful he was. He gave me several referrals to Dr's in Orange and LA county. Only Dr. Truong (UCI) and Dr. Berke (UCLA) were on my insurance list, but my insurance has still denied me seeing them so far. They have another two weeks to respond to my latest appeal. I called and asked if they would listen to a voice recording, but they said no, they would call me if they had any questions. My voice seems to be getting worse as time goes by. I really can't talk at all now, except in a high "falsetto" voice. I feel silly, but it is all I can do. |

Insurance is weird! My insurance covers the Botox shots that I receive 500 miles away. Of course, they don't cover the travel. Call--I realize with SD that is difficult--and ask. It would be worth it to stop getting useless shots. |

My prior Dr. gave me names of Dr's in Orange Co. and LA. My insurance denied my request. I am appealing it. Very frustrating! They approved a visit to a local neurologist who doesn't treat vocal chords and referred all SD patients to my previous Dr. |
