I have AD/SD and I'm getting my first BOTOX shot on Thursday 9/18. My doctor hasn't shared anything with me. Yes, I'm scared. What can I expect during/after etc.

I haven't had mine yet but from what I heard, the outcome is pretty amazing! Be positive. Don't let your body repel the Botox. Accept it. I hope to hear from you soon how your first experience was.

Best luck!

My first experience with Botox was on June 26th. I received 3.25 bilaterally lying down. My doctor does alongside a neurologist to make sure he hits the correct spot. I thought he injection itself was a piece of cake.

The results afterwards varies from person to person. From what I have read on this board, the majority of people receive positive results. I wasn't as fortunate as the spasms returned after 12 days post Botox. I head to Mayo next week for my second round of injections.

Don't worry; it's really a pretty painless procedure. You'll do just fine. If your doctor allows for questions prior to injecting, have him explain what he is going to do. My doctors explained everything in great detail so I knew what to expect. It definitely helped to calm my nerves. Good luck.

Hope you don't mind if I ask how much a Botox injection costs. You can e-mail me on nemci7v@yahoo.com in case we're not allowed to post such information on the boards.

If such information isn't allowed on the board, then it was nice being here, the short while.

My insurance rejected my doctor's claim, because I was foolish enough to seek medical advice, treatment when my voice started to go bad. Oxford has a "pre-existing condition" clause attatched to my policy, so treatment isn't covered for one full year because I was treated several weeks previously; the nerve of me to visit a doctor while I didn't have insurance, and was unemployed. I paid for my office visit previously out of pocket; because I didn't have previous insurance, and was treated previously or sought medical advice, they declined my request.

The bill for Botox for me, $1,100. The bill still hurts. Ouch; but I needed it badly. I'm still paying. Have another $300 left on the bill. My company, God bless the owner, is looking for alternative insurance "just for me" so that I don't get screwed by Oxford. What I pay, is NYC. My doctor did let on that the insurance company, if they pay, only pays $750-800, but the doctor accepts payment as paid in full for the benefit of being listed in the Insurance directory. What I don' t understand, if the insurance company only will pay $750 and doctors will accept that, why cash payments is $1,100? I was told, "going rate", doctor overhead expenses has to be covered. . But, I'm hoping my employer can get me into another insurance coverage before my next treatment of Botox is needed. Otherwise, I have to weigh the cost benefits of that withy my salar and really, am contemplating quitting this job if nothing can be found as far as insurance relief.

Hi, there,

Just wanted to say welcome to the NSDA bulletin board from a fellow NY-er with SD.

I wanted to give you some info. on the insurance issue so you don't quit your job too soon. All insurance companies in NYC (and most other places) will have that same pre-existing condition clause... so switching to Aetna, BlueCross, GHI, etc. will not solve the problem unfortunately. The only thing that will is time. In fact, if you switch insurances you might find yourself waiting even longer - i.e., 11 months to one year from whenever you pick up the new policy.

They key is that from this point forward you try to be on an insurance plan continuously. If you switch jobs, don't quit first (and lose your insurance) as then your time on your current insurance (Oxford) will be "credit-able" to decrease the pre-existing clause on a new plan.

Hopefully you'll only need another 2-3 injections before that waiting period is up and then you can settle into a good treatment routine, knowing it is covered.

So switching jobs will not solve the insurance dilemma as any new policy you join will impose those same limitations. The only exception I know to those is joining a HUGE group... i.e., places with over 300 employees, for example, as then sometimes pre-existing condition exclusions don't apply to those policies, but even that is rare.

Well, good luck with the insurance issue and welcome again to the bulletin board,
Laurie

I was thinking about quitting so that I could find a job where my voice isn't the focal point to work. Going back to fixing computers or something technical like that; I've decided not to let Botox treatment bankrupt me; I can't afford this, really, with this low-paying job. So, when I'm in need of treatment again, If my insurance situation is the same, I'll go flip burgers if I have to because I cannot do this jot without Botox; I would leave work physically drained having to make 200+ calls per day, leaving msg, talking ot people; I can't do this again. I gagging just thinking about that.

thanks for your info, Laurie. I didn't know that all NY companies have this "pre - existing" clause; my boss is looking for anohter insurance plan / provider to purchase for me.

Thanks. In 24 hours I'll be at University of Virginia hospital getting my first shot. Yes, I'm counting down the hours. I'm really nervous about the whole thing.

I have been getting botox injections for seven years. I think the most important thing is to try to remain calm. I know its not easy. If anxiety gets the best of you, you can ask your doctor to prescribe a anti-anxiety medication. I take .5mg of Valium before and it helps. I also have a local anesthetic injected first. Once it takes effect, this helps with the urge to cough and swallow while the needle is in. The needle my doctor uses is very small so I barely feel it at all, just a tiny pinch. The whole procedure, for me, usually takes less than ten minutes, but in the beginning it took about 20 minutes. Be patient with yourself and your doctor. It takes time to regulate the dosage for the best result. It also takes your doctor time to learn your individual anatomy. My results with Botox have been amazing. Once the "breathiness and hoarseness" subside (which takes about ten days)I have a normal voice for a good 10-12 weeks. Best of luck to you.
