For what....What do people say you sound like? | ![]() | ||

Hey gang, I thought I'd create this topic, just for fun. My job requires phone useage all day, basically talking to strangers. I get all kinds of comments. Just for the fun of it, what are some of the funniest things you hear you sound like? Or overall comments about "what's wrong with your voice"? Just to lighten the moment a bit. And, how do you respond? I've been told / asked:

I could truthfully say yes to that last one. |

If you are driving crossing borders (e.g. Canada, Mexico), the custom officiers probably would not ask you if you're nervous. They would just ask you to pull over and search your car. It happened to me:-) |

For me it's, " what's wrong with your voice?"
But mostly it's, "do you have Laryngitis?" On this same topic, have you noticed some people will make a face while they are listening to you talk? I have told a few people during mid sentence as I see their faces wince, "don't worry I just have a vocal cord problem" then they relax. Raymond AD/SD |

I used to have a bunch of replies to this one but recently
I have not had anyone say anything about my voice. I answer and make a lot of phone call and the last few months no one says anything about my voice even when I think it is bad. I am not sure what is going on but I like it. Last week I had to do a bunch of stuff for my mom like getting building supplies and talking to strangers so as usual I got my note pad and started my lists and due to hurricane Ike no one had the building supplies I needed but instead of remaking my notes I just winged it and actually had some clerks flirting with me and that is quite amazing and all of you probably know why. Anyway dreaded day turned into great day. Mom is happy also. |

I have two favorites:
First one was a food server. I order. She can't hear me. She says to my husband, "What does she want?" Funny thing was it was a noisy restaurant and he didn't hear me either. Second has happened several times. I have to assume that people think I am really aged when I speak and they start talking really loudly. I hear just fine. People are strange! |

I live in Scandinavia and Swedish is my native language, but people often switch to English with me - assuming that the way I speak is due to inadequate language skills. I once ordered a complete meal speaking Swedish, but got all the answers/questions in English. I don't think the person ever realised that it was a little weird. It has happened that people mimic the way I pronounce a word (with the hestitation or the break) instead of answering the question. Not very nice. When I was younger I got intimidated when people told me to speak up. Nowadays I simply reply: I can't. Maria

Thanks for the laugh wolfe. I totally get the who hearing thing. It's funny because I always think people are surprised to meet me in person & feel like I probably sound older. I am dysarthric too, & a sometimes people think I am deaf. I know this is terrible, but my dad has worked w/ heavy equipment for many years & is hard of hearing. Talking to him on the phone is terrible!!! I pretty much have to repeat everything I say 3 or 4 times. In response to the question, the funniest thing (only b/c it never ceases to amaze me how rude people can be) is when a telemarketer called me & when I told her I didn't need to order any marketing materials; that all of that is handled @ the main office. She asked if I had been drinking & if I was OK. It was 2:30 in the afternoon & I was at work. |

Wow I can relate to the food order episode. That happens to me ALL the time. I anticipate it now because they always have to ask me several times when I'm going to order after I've told them the order twice already. |

This is an interesting topic....
I have heard many of the same things as the others.... Are you sick?
Then there are those people who don't ask questions, they'll just say things like "you poor thing, go rest your voice." Those seems like assumptions that I'm sick. What I have noticed for some time now is that I get more inquiries when I'm Botoxed than when I'm not. At first, this was very interesting to me because I expected the opposite. I think it's because that sounds like something more recognizable (a cold/laryngitis) whereas the spasms can be hard for people to figure out. I don't get many questions asking "why do all of your words get cut off?" The worst for me, which someone else mentioned, are the facial grimaces. I hate them. I want to say "believe me buddy, it's worse for me and I'm not cringing." As I come to terms more with the disorder, I'm being more honest about it. But, I also don't feel like I owe quick encounters full explanations about "what's wrong." |

I have a good one. I work in a rehab gym where there are several therapist working with patients at the same time. I work out alot and try to stay strong (its good therapy) but I'm a small person. One of my co-workers told me that her patient asked her what was wrong with that frail little lady with the shaky voice. I was really offended at being called a frail little lady! Actually we all got a good laugh out of it. |

Choked up: We understand our disorder, so it's easy for us to know what's going on. To the person listening, they don't know our words are being "cut off" because our vocal cords are slamming shut, cutting off our air so that the vibration is cut off to the vocal cords; they don't know that. They just know how our voice sounds: choked up. Here's an unbiased assessment. My job, I work at a lawfirm, doing collections for collection agencies, and all outbound and inbound calls are recorded. I can click a menu on the computer and record my convo at any time. For fun, and to see what a debtor is hearing, I record. I'm amazed how I sound. I sound "choked up", emotional, nervous, or like I'm going to cry. I really do. It makes me say, "wow" when I hear my own voice. Yes, my words are being cut off, but how it sounds, is like I'm about to cry. As far as the person's facial expressions. I love when the listener gets that look of "they're in pain". I take it in stride, or try to. But, when they look like something hurts them, that's indication how awful I do sound. I'm grinding through the words, and it's like they're the one being put through the ringer. :) |

After Botox treatment, during my hoarseness periods, which lasted three weeks straight for me, men told me they loved my voice that way. Weird. |

Well, I had abductor SD for a long time and people who know me actually said they thought it sounded sexy! How about that? It doesn't feel sexy to me though! The other thing I have gotten is that I guess sometimes I take a big breath before I start to talk and people say bless you! because they think I sneezed! Funny. |
