I have had SD (ABDSD) for many years, while my voice has never been strong, with effort i am understood. Recently i came down with an acute case of GERD, my voice is practiically gone, reduced to a whisper. Has anyone had similar experience with GERD. Is there some association between SD and Acid Reflux. Going through a very difficult time. Any advice would be appreciated. |

Dear Bob: There are a number of posts on Acid Reflux and SD in the archives section of this bulletin board. I have abductor SD and acid reflux. I take medication for the acid reflux. I have not found that the medication has improved my SD voice. Good luck to you. Mary Bifaro

Yes, I've had SD for 8 years and have been on Nexium, Protonics and/or Prilosec ever since. In fact my doctor first diagnosed me with acid reflux then finally SD. |

I have ADSD. I also have GERD and LPR, laryngopharyngeal reflux. I am on medicine for both kinds of reflux. At this point, my reflux is being managed. My LPR keeps my throat and vocal chords inflammed and swollen, but within the mild range. My reflux hinders my voice at times, but doesn't affect the SD spasms. It affects my voice differently. Carol

Me too! I take Nexium and was only diagnosed after a persistent cough was the only symptom of the acid reflux. With SD-Adductor type for 20 years, it was just about 3 yrs ago that my allergy doctor could not find source of cough, since it was not the allergies to dust, cat, or any lung infection causing the cough. Finally, a pulmonary doctor diagnosed it after routine lung and breathing tests and prescribed the Nexium. What a relief to finally quit coughing so much.

I was diagnosised with reflux in the search for a diagnosis to my voice. I have absolutely no relux symptoms but a bravo study (where they put a chip in my esophagus for a few days to monitor the acid levels) said that I have reflux. I take the medication but it has no effect on my voice. Katie ADSD |

Interestingly, after I had my SLAD-R Dr. Berke prescribed meds for GERD even though I had no history of GERD and had taken the same meds several years before the surgery to see if it'd clear my voice up; it didn't have any effect. However, he seems to take the view that SLAD-R patients, certainly me in any case, should take the GERD meds as a matter of course. Apparently, all people have a bit of acid reflux after eating so it's a precautionary move. Have other SLAD-R patients also been prescrbed the GERD meds like I was? Gary |
