Botox Injections - Different Methods

I know there have been discussions about the various methods. I have one doctor who uses a scope and injects into the neck. The injection actually goes into the "true" vocal cord and you can actually see the vocal cord balloon (or swell up). This tells him that the botox was injected and I would say the success rate is in the 80-90% range. My other doctor, uses the EMG method with the injectin through the neck. This one normarlly does not work.

I asked my 2 doctors if they would talk so that they could compare notes so that I could get the same type of injection (and results), but that conversation did not prove fruitful.

Any thoughts on these 2 methods.

Thanks

Yes, I have had both and prefer the technique that is visualized. Neither technique is particularly pleasant-- the EMG-guided technique can be a fishing expedition and is done w/o anesthesia and the visualized technique includes 3 forms of anesthesia which are very unpleasant when administered-- but if I have to choose, I'll always choose visualization simply because the results are significantly more predictable and that's the clincher for me.

The doc who has done my EMG-guided injections does not offer visualization. I did not want to switch from him, but had to in order to have the other technique.

Can I ask why you don't just use the effective technique for every injection? Why would you go back to the technique you said hasn't worked for you?

The only reason is cost. The doctor where my botox has been the most successful is in Houston. That requires a plane trip, car rental, and a full day out of the office. In Dallas, where it is not effective, is in Dallas which is local, drive down the street, miss about 1.5 hours of work. I have been doing this for over 15 years, usually 3-4 times a year, so it all adds up. thanks for asking.

I can't help but wonder if some laryngologists have a better feel for the EMG method than others. Have you considered switching docs in Dallas? I'm AbSD and have had great results with the EMG method. I also live in the DFW area and get my injections at UT Southwest by Dr. Mau.

Who do you see in Dallas? My doctor in Dallas uses both the scope and the EMG and injects through the neck. My doctor in Houston used only the scope, but injected down the throat, not through the neck.

I got anesthesia with both methods. With the scope only and down the throat, I got a numbing/decongestant solution sprayed into my nostrils and down my throat. With the EMG and scope, I get the spray into the nostrils, anesthesia under the skin in the neck, and anesthesia into the larynx.
