Choking when coughing?

Hi all
I had my last botox for abductor SD at the end of September. Haven't been well since with a chesty cough (don't think that is related to the botox) but on 3 occasions whilst coughing badly, I have choked on my 'own throat'.... not sure how else to describe it! It is a horrible feeling when you live alone and are gasping for breath. Just wondered if anyone else had it and whether it is likely to be a weakness in the throat caused by the botox?
Saw my GP and he has prescribed meds to try and suppress the cough?? Seems to be working so far!!

Hi Kat,
I don't know about your chesty cough, but I do know that ABsd is more difficult because botox is injected in the back of the throat where respiratory breath control happens. So the botox can interfere with breathing. Your doctor really needs to know what he is doing.

Another thing that I've found out is this. That with ABsd one side is sometimes weaker than the other so different doses have to be administered. If you want to email me at home, I can send you the information on that. trish0@dslextreme.com

Hope you're feeling better.

Thanks Irish
I have had a few botox jabs now, and the doc always seems to only get 1 side injected well. Fortunately this is the good side for me and has given me a good voice in the past. I was just interested if this was a common thing or just specifically to do with the cough. So I am guessing it is due to the cough :)
I will speak to my consultant about it when I go again.
Kat

I choke on my own saliva as well as water or little particles of food. Then I go on to cough. Since I am a little older-55 it then leads to bladder leakage! I really hate the side effects but being able to talk outweighs those problems. I also hear there is a study to see if asthma is more previlent after botox injections.

I would be interested in hearing the results of that study. If anyone hears anything could they please let us all know?

Botox also weakens the muscle so a certain amount of fine motor control is lost. A speech therapist also told me that you should never talk when eating or drinking because most choking instances happen during that time. It is much better to listen than talk. Eating and talking are two complex functions for the throat and they shouldn't be done at the same time.
