Hi..Spoke to a Dr Coll (ENT)today who works at St Vincents Hospital in Sydney, Australia (I'm looking at all alternatives at the moment)..He does the Thyroplasty2 surgery on women only(unfortunately this proceedure is not successful in men)..A very small implant of some sort is inserted some where in the vocal cord..Dr Coll has performed this op on 18 women & has had very good results giving them all normal to near normal voices..The good thing also is that it can be reversed if your not happy with it..HELP!!! I don't see any information re: Thyroplasty2 on this bulletin board..Does anybody out there know anything about this operation??..Jenni |

I've researched Thyroplasty 2 quite a bit. There seems to be very few doctors who do it for SD. They do use Thyroplasty for other conditions more frequently. You are correct, they put a titanium bridge between the vocal chords. It prevents the vocal chords from hitting against eachother. And yes, it can be taken out if it doesn't work. The one girl I was in touch with who had it said it left her a bit on the breathy side, but had no spasms at all and was very happy with the results. Lori B

Hello: I live in Rochester, home of Mayo Clinic. I have been under the care of a laryngologist at Mayo who has performed the Type 2 Thyroplasty on me about 5 years ago. There was never any mention of it being successful only for women. I have experienced marginal success from it and have been back in for many many surgeries to do everything from loosening the vocal folds to fat injections, to God knows what else. I do not have the "locked up" voice condition I had prior to the Type 2 and have a steady voice though very hoarse. Believe it or not I teach college and my students accept my voice - some days are extremely rough. It appears they want good knowledge and teaching over opera quality pipes. I think the Type 2 is worth pursuing. We all know we need to try something! SD is such a tough foe and a lonely fight. Dave |

Hi Dave..Have you considered having the SLAD-R surgery..Is the implant still in your vocal cord or have you had it removed due to the other surgeries..I most likely will try this proceedure as it can always be reversed & if need be I can go back to having botox shots, which work Ok for me..They don't perform SLAD-R surgery here in Australia..Thanks for your reply..Good to hear that your not allowing this affliction to ruin your teaching career..Good teaching definetly is all your students would be concerned about..Jenni Modified by Jenny at Sat, Dec 12, 2009, 00:34:36 |

Hi Jenny: The SLAD-R procedure will not help me at this time. I have one totally paralyzed vocal cord and the numerous surgeries I have received in the last 5 years have been focused on maximizing the good cord and loosening the tissue around the bad cord. I asked my Mayo Clinic laryngologist about the procedure and he did not recommend it for me. I do believe it has promise for many from the limited research I have done. I wish you the best if you elect to receive the surgery. It is so great knowing our condition is finally getting the recognition it deserves and the talents of physicians are focused on advances in corrective care.

Hi Lori..I wonder with the reply "breathy" would the girl have been able to be heard clearly, like in a crowded shopping centre or bar..When I refer to breathy (after botox) I can be heard in very quite places only, that breathiness usually lasts for about 3 weeks then I get a good voice for a few months..I wouldn't consider the operation if ater the operation I still had a permanent quite voice..Did the girl mention how quite (breathy) her voice was?..Jenni Marsh |

Dave said he sounded hoarse. That might be a better description. With the girl I was in contact with, I really don't know how much volume got from her voice. I would ask a few doctors that do the procedure for their input on that. Lori B |

I had thyroplasty 2 surgery at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale in 2006 and a revision surgery in 2007. I have mixed feelings about the surgery. My voice is better now than it has been for years but I still have some problems with it. I believe part of it is due to all of the methods I used to compensate for years. I have lots of bad habits to get rid of. My voice is quite hoarse but has minimal breaks. It is good enough to work dispatch for a very large Sheriffs Department.
