About 3 years ago I went on a medicine called Risperdal which changed my voice. It gopt me depressed cuz I was a singer and it made me shy away from firends, and family cuz my voice chnaged. Now I don't have hiccups in my voice just a change of voice. This lasted for about a year until I went on a sleeping pill of seroquel. I woke up the next day and my voice started changing back to normal. I was so happy! So did this happen to anyone else on here. Who here only had their voice change from anti-depressent/ anti-pychotic medicine? And do you think anyone else knows about this cure? Thansk

I would like to know "seroquel" really can cure SD. I have an insomnia for many years. I went to "sleep specialist" about 6 years ago and was given "seroquel". I got my SD soon after. Coincidence? I kept thinking that my condition was drug induced. I am so confused. I have been taking small dose of seroquel as a sleeping aid ever since. It did not cure my SD so far. How much are you supposed to take it?

Hi!
Here is one list of drugs that can cause dystonia. My own voice got very bad from anti-depressants in 2005. So far it has not recovered to the previous (more managable) state... One doc told me that Lyrica (pregabalin) has helped improve SD in some cases. I haven't tried it yet, but I have a prescription.

According to the WE MOVE (Worldwide Education and Awareness for Movement Disorders) website:

Drugs That May Cause Dystonia:

Drugs belonging to a class called "dopamine receptor blocking agents" (DRBAs) can cause dystonia. The following is a list of such drugs that can cause dystonia.

Generic (Trade Names)

Acetophenazine (Tindal®)
Amoxapine (Asendin®)
Chlorpromazine (Thorazine®)
Fluphenazine (Permitil®, Prolixin®)
Haloperidol (Haldol®)
Loxapine (Loxitane®, Daxolin®)
Mesoridazine (Serentil®)
Metaclopramide (Reglan®)
Molindone (Lindone®, Moban®)
Perphenazine (Trilafon® or Triavil®)
Piperacetazine (Quide®)
Prochlorperazine (Compazine®, Combid®)
Promazine (Sparine®)
Promethazine (Phenergan®)
Thiethylperazine (Torecan®)
Thioridazine (Mellaril®)
Thiothixene (Navane®)
Trifluoperazine (Stelazine®)

Yes , I found a list of drugs see: post by Maria 8/13/2010 . "It is under Questions about Spasmodic Dysphonia, Plz help I think I found a cure." Personally I don't beleive the drugs caused my problem. I think I receied a phycical injury to my throat, that started the whole thing. However drugs may help one feel better, especially when one is try to sleep and the spasms start.SO it's clear it's not all about emotion, when one is awaken from sleep by spasms.

My doctor put me on a small dose of Klonopin up to twice a day which relaxes the tension in the larynx. So that may be what you are experiencing. If your SD was not severe, then you may just need a relaxant to help. Everyone is different and there is often no rhyme or reason as to what works and what doesn't. Good luck with your continued improvement.

I have been on Klonipin for several years with no change in my voice. Actually, it's gotten worse. And I started Lyrica two months ago for my Fibro pain with no change in my voice. It has helped with muscle pain though but not to my liking. Wish it helped more.
