I received my 2nd botox injection yesterday and I am worried once again that it is not going to work. The first one I received a few months ago improved my voice for a few days and then back to the usual. I never got a hoarse or breathy voice it just did not work. Yesterday the doctor increased the dosage and injected both sides. Today my voice is much improved but now I am afraid it is going to be like last time and not work. If it is not working, is it because the doctor is not hitting the right spot? or is it possible I may not be a candidate for the botox? Would love some feedback and I am trying so hard not to get frustrated but just want to be able to speak. Thank you - Jean |

Your problems and frustrations with Botox are not unique. During my eight years of getting botox shots I always had problems getting appreciable and consistent benefits. I always struggled with getting the 'right' dosage; I never got the same dosage twice consecutively. About the only consistent result I ever had was the prolonged hoarseness which was about as bad as the spasms. You may not yet want to give up on this treatment because getting it right, if this is possible, may take a year or more. |

Thank you for your reply. I am still not hoarse but will give it a week or so to see if there are any changes, and then the dr. said if no results he will reschedule me for another injection. I will keep trying until hopefully it has a good result. Thanks again . Jean |

I just received another botox injection on Wednesday, December 8th. This is my 5th injection since being diagnosed with SD in February 2009. It is always different for me. The time before I woke up the next day with no voice but it normally it takes two or three days before I get the breathy voice. Today my voice has just went away today and I am breathy. Hopefully this injection will work for you. If it doesnt it could be the doctor is missing the spot. It can be frustrating but once a shot works, it is worth it to be able to speak clearly. Good luck! |

People vary very widely in how much botox they need to alleviate their spasms and the dosage needed is unrelated to severity or frequency of the spasms, age, size, sex, etc. It can vary by as much as 20 times. It also depends on the doctor and how skilled he or she is in targeting the muscles. I personally would not go to anyone who is not a nationally known expert in the field. I travel from Columbia, MO to Chicago to Dr. Bastian, who is one of the best, for my injections.
I would recommend seeing someone who is an expert even if you have to travel and trying a much higher dose of botox. You can't just tell the doctor the dose you want to try, though, because the potency of the drug depends on each clinic's preparation. Ask instead to get a dose that is in a certain percentile range. For you, maybe 85% higher than average. Best, D |

Dwight C. Man, you are so right.....and shot placement is very critical I think, and once you find 'that doc' and it's working for you, stick with 'em. |

D I could not agree more. Since this post, I had another injection last Monday with a new doctor who specializes in this and by Wednesday I was hoarse and still am. Never thought I would be excited about that but it is great. FINALLY someone hit it. My new doctor is one I found on this website and he is awesome. He does 75 of these injections a month. The other doctor I was going to had no other patients with this condition but me ,so no wonder the shots did not work. Hoping to get my voice back for at least a few months once this wears off. Anything is better than nothing that is for sure. Jean |

That is great news friend, and the breathy voice should be on the heels of the hoarseness. I am so happy for you, and good job on your part for (1) determined persistence and (2) the courage to switch physicians! You are awesome and in all our prayers. |

Thank you so much. Also when I went to see the new doctor, it was the first time I heard someone else with SD speak. There was a lady in the waiting room who made a phone call and it was like hearing myself talk. For the first time I knew I was really not alone and now I feel like there is hope. This website and everyone here has been the best support I could have asked for. Jean |

In what part of the country are you located? I'm in the Atlanta area, and the docs at Emory are supposed to be some of the best. I have had good luck with botox. The last injection wasn't as good as the others. One big problem I have is that my throat gets really tired. Botox seems to really help that. |
