Hi, I am looking for a voice amplifier that is good for classroom teaching. I have ADSD and the louder I attempt to speak, the more breaks I get in my voice. I have searched archives and it seems like "chattervox" is pretty popular. After looking at it online, I'm not a big fan of the fanny pack type device. Do any of you have any other suggestions? Thanks so much. |

There is a downloadable document on voice amplification on our NSDA website at: www.dysphonia.org under "Publications & Videos". This document might be able to give you further ideas. Mary Bifaro

Look up Califone personal PA systems made especially for teachers. I am a teacher and assistant principal and bought one last year. It's great and use it all the time. The cost is much cheaper than the Chattervox and hooks onto your pants. I usually put mine to the backside as I walk around the room and am at the board during my math classes. I will also begin to look at wireless as I go along and can continue in this field. Good luck! |

My heart goes out to you. I tried teaching with SD. Had a voice chatter vox, think it was made by Seimens. At the end of the day, I was exhausted; it was like I taught 10 classes instead of 5. You may want to think about phasing out of this occupation. The voice requirements as you know, are over the top. |

I taught fourth grade for 19 years and have SD. During the last 8 years I used an amplifing device. My husband and I shopped for it ourselves and the school district paid for it. I knew that I did not want the "squak box" sitting in the corner. My husband installed surround sound speakers in the corners of the classroom. I used a clip on microphone (or a headset) with a "receiver" attached to my belt. The rest of the equipment included a soundboard and ???? (I'm not good at electronics.) It worked beautifully. Even the students sitting in the back could hear my voice because of the surround sound speakers. I would suggest that you go to a music store and ask them to help you choose your equipment. Or, even to a music/drama director at a college nearby or a church. These a people who work with microphones and speaker set ups. I wish you lots of success. If you know someone who could help with the set up and the shopping that would be great. If you have any questions let me know. |

Thank you for your suggestions. I never thought of that from the music perspective - even though many years ago, I used to sing the National Anthem in front of my school, I was in a choir for most of my school years, and sang at weddings! You think I would have thought of the voice amplification from that perspective!!! Good luck to you as well. |
