I was recently diagnosed with SD and have now had my first treatment with Botox. I am at a loss as to how this came about affecting me. I have ready many things about dysphonia and its relation to the many differnt types of distonia. I found an intersting artical relating an SD case to an accident involving a head injury. The persons involved had a motorocycle accident in which his helmet was pushed back on his head and his chin strap put pressure on his vocal cords causing damage to the nerves in the muscle group which brought on what the writer noted as a case of distonia. It went on to mention SD in the artical. I have lost the link to the page, however this was very intersting to me. In 2001 I had a head injury due to a mountian bike accident. I do not remember the particulars of the accident as I lost some time before and after the incident took place. They found me having siezures with trauma to the lower portion of my face (below the nose). My helmet took a very heavy hit on the very top and was destroyed in the process. I was in a small town and they did not have the facilities to test or treat me for head injury. After traveling home I noticed memory loss and other issues and sought treatment for head injury. The doctor stated that he thought I had case of subdural hematoma however it had been such a long time since the injury he could not make a full diagnosis. My facial trauma healed and my memory improved to the point that I feel like I have recovered about 90 percent of my abilities. Part of that is due to the fact that the brain can compensate for damage by using different areas that are not normally used for that function. I feel like I have three different things that could have occoured during this one trauma event that might contribute to my case of SD - 1. The action of the event may have pushed my helmet back causing the chin strap to come in contact with my vocal cord area causing damage to the nerves. 2. My vocal cord area may have come in contact with my handlebar causing damage from the striking motion of my body against the bike. 3. The head trauma caused by my striking the ground and the subsequent brain injury from the blow. Of course my main issue with any of these items relate to the fact that I have only been aware of my voice issues for about a year so the head injury listed above happened over nine years before. My only other issue that might have anything to do with or relating to known causes of SD is a case of pnuemonia two years ago. My treating physician does not want to touch on causes and told me to look forward instead of back on what might have or might not have caused my SD. However the question lingers and begs to be asked. |

The cause of SD remains unknown. However, thanks to research, we are making strides toward understanding the rare neurological voice disorder which is SD. If you haven't already done so, I'd recommend that you read two articles posted on our website at www.dysphonia.org under "latest news". One is called "Changes in brain identified in SD" and the other is entitled "Brainstem pathology in SD". Mary Bifaro

Those were both interesting articles, but they both went in a different direction than I thought they would. The body is a truly a miracle and a mystery. I have been through several traumatic events in my life that I thought as I was going through them, that I would not live to see another day, yet I have fully recovered. And then you have SD, something that at first seems like an innocent nuisance but yet can turn out to be very disruptive, and with no known cure or cause it seems destined to march on. However, I guess it is better than a lot of other health issues that are out there.

As a psychologist I have encountered many patients with traumatic brain injury and other disorders following motor vehicle and other accidents. If your symptoms followed your injury within a year or so I think a casual connection MIGHT be drawn. Given the 9 year gap I think other factors are more likely at work. I hope this is of some help.
