I don't have too many vices but I do drink several diet sodas on most days. Curious if there are others that consumed a lot of diet soda at the time of their onset of sd. thanks |

I don't know about diet soda causing SD, but they are saying that diet soda(generally) is not so good for you...Just to play it safe(I used to drink ALOT), I drink very little diet soda anymore.( I have replaced it with water and iced tea.)

I have noticed that drinking coffee and soft drinks does make my voice more hoarse and worse when the Botox is "wearing" off. I think the caffeine does have a large role in SD keeping in line with the GABA concept, while soft drinks would irritate the vocal cords with the acidity. There's no consistency in any theories or with any one group of those afflicted, which is what makes this such a difficult ailment to treat and/or cure. I would stay away from anything that seems to bother you or just know that if you indulge, you will be adversely affected. |

Dear KH, I think I was probably using a lot of nutrasweet (aspartame) when I started having my voice problems. It was several years before I was diagnosed with AB SD and took Botox shots for 3 years after that. Soon after, I read about a person who was having reduced motor control of arms and hands and was consuming 6 to 8 packets of nutrasweet a day and was questioning if there was a link. In my own reasoning, I thought the voicebox, being muscle I assume, might could also be affected. I decided to experiment and eliminated all nutrasweet (aspartame) from my diet. After only 1 day and night, I woke up to a Voice! Not a great voice, but before, I could only whisper. That experience has been 15 years ago. I still struggle with my voice, and still claim to have SD, but I've managed much better since. My interpretation is the aspartame aggravated the situation, as I've always had a weak voice, low volume, so a variety of things could probably affect it. However, I have not used any aspartame since. |

Thank you all for the information. I will make an effort to cut back and perhaps eliminate diet pop from my diet. The odd thing is, is when my voice first started changing I had given up diet pop a short time previous and started jogging trying to take better care of myself. |

It's odd that you mention that. My throat would get sore from straining, and I discovered that an ice cold soda made it feel better. So I have developed a habit of drinking a lot of soda since the onset of my first symptoms of SD. |

I'd love to hear from others about aspartame(nutrasweet)usage before being diagnosed. Many websites claim aspartame is broken down into neurotoxins and can lead to a variety of problems. Since starting this thread I've given up all diet pop which has been difficult in itself. |
