Preface: Before you read this note, I want to extend all the caveots of what worked for me might not work for you; Also do NOT attempt this without first talking to a doctor. Find out if your neck can tolerate it and how many pounds of traction should you use.

BACKGROUND
I was diagnosed with AD/SD in 1998. A few years ago, I drove to Augusta, GA to Dr. Greg Postma at the Medical College of GA.
Dr. Postma is Director of all the speech related activity.
He told me I had a mild case of SD and a major case of MTD.
Dr. Postma recommended Speech Therapy to cure the MTD.

I went to Speech Therapy sessions for well over a year with no change in my voice.

HERE IS THE MTD CURE PART:

Last year my arthritis and weight lifting did me in. My family doctor said I had pinched nerves in my neck, bone spurs and
the like.

I went to a neurosurgeon and rather than get me directly into surgery, he told me to do a month of head/neck traction, twice daily.

I went to a nearby medical supply store and bought a traction device. This gadget hangs over any door in your house. It also came with a harness, pulley, thin rope, hooks and a rubber bladder that can be filled with water to provide the prescribed amount of weight for the head/neck traction.

The harness fit under my chin, around and over the back of my head. The bladder was filled with water to equate to 10 lbs wich my doctor prescribed for me. I was to do this head/neck traction twice a day for a month.

At the end of the month, my pinched nerve was still there BUT the stretching of my neck muscles freed up my neck from the MTD. It is gone! That was 6 months ago and it is still gone.

Everyone who hears me speak says my voice is not perfect but at least 80% better. It is not 100% better because I still have the mild case of AD/sd.

Good luck out there for anyone with MTD.

This is really interesting. I had tried this years ago for the arthritis in my neck that I think was caused from an old neck injury. I had a hard time with it though because I found the strap that goes under the chin to be very uncomfortable so I got rid of it. Now I'm curious about it helping my MTD.

Yes, I had the strap around the head and under the neck too. What I did was set the traction gadget over a door so I could watch tv. I focused as much as possible on the tv and the time went faster.

By the way...
The reason why I attributed the MTD cure to the head/neck traction is that was the only thing I did that was different.
If you decide to pursue it, please speak to your doctor first. I was a 225 lb male then (lost weight since) and I was told to use 10 lb. Perhaps in your case, given your history, the doctor may either tell you to avoid it OR try a much lower weight.

Thanks for the advice. I would definitely check with my doctor first. I'm sure I would need much less weight especially to start. I'll have to consider this again. How long has the cure lasted?

It has been about 4 months since I finished the head/neck traction and so far, so good.
