Sucking in air mid-sentence?

Hey everyone, my mom has SD. She was diagnosed in her early 50s. She uses her voice a lot, as she just changed careers and became a teacher (a shame this happened at the worst possible time). She had Botox injections for awhile but decided to do voice therapy since the Botox was giving her a month of a very weak voice, which made her job difficult. Now her voice ranges from weak to almost normal, but it's usually quite hoarse and creaky, and she struggles to talk.

I noticed that when she talks sometimes in the middle of the sentence she will "suck in" air - it's a very shallow, almost gulping air action. She is very self conscious about the way she talks and I figure the vocal coach will address it, but I wanted to ask if this is normal or if it's a bad vocal habit? If it's related to SD is it because she is trying to get control of her voice? Sometimes it makes her sound worse, and when she's stressed out it tightens up even more.

You are absolutely right, you can develop compensating habits with SD that are not good habits. I was a teacher for 26 years and did it with ADSD. The stress of the job doesn't help either.

If you like, I can send you a list of vocal health tips and also USC speech therapy exercises that may be helpful.

Your mom may ask the school district for an amplifier to make her job easier and/or an amplified phone. Employers legally have to provide equipment to help someone with a disability.

I had to fight for my job eventually, so if she runs into that problem I have suggestions for her on that topic as well.

That happens to me at times when the botox seems to have taken particularly strong. It can take a lot of effort to push the voice out, so I'll have to stop mid-sentence to breathe in and get some air and strength back. She sshould ask about lower doses, alternating chords. The doctors can always tweak things to ease the breathiness and weakness.
