Thank you for replying to my post. What were you first symptoms like? What do you do for treatments?

Hi Sarah,Well I'm 34, and was diagnosed with ADSD at the age of 31. It seems like we've had our condition for about the same length of time. My onset began in Feb. of 2009. I am also from MA and make regular visits to Boston to see my doctor for botox shots. They've been a life saver for me. It's not easy for anyone with this condition, but I definitely think being younger, like us, is quite troublesome. Wishing you all the best,
Darlene

Hi Darlene,
Thank you for replying to my post! I am interested in meeting more people with SD who are my age. Where in MA are you from? Who do you see for your shots? I have had amazing success with my shots. I havent needed a shot in almost 2 1/2 years. I am about to begin my career as a Speech-Language Pathologist in a few weeks. I try to think as positive as I can about having SD. It has given me a point of view that really helps me as a therapist but it scares me that I dont know when the botox will wear off. Is there anything you do to try and keep yourself positive about having SD?Thanks! Sarah

Hi Sara & Darlene,
I'm 33 years-old now but first noticed the symptoms when I was 13 years-old. I wasn't diagnosed until 27 years-old. I'd love to share more of our stories together, especially since it seems you both live in the Boston area. It's been tough on me for the last few months because I'm 3 months-pregnant and not getting the botox injections. Could use more support right now...

Hi Sarah,
I too am a speech language pathologist with spasmodic dysphonia (ABSD). I am 34 years old and first noticed the condition right after I turned 32. Thankfully, my condition hasn't really gotten in the way of my job. I work with the elderly in long term care and I think that my struggles make me more relatable and I have a greater empathy. I remember in grad. school when I did an externship at a Veteran's home our clinical supervisors were always reminding us to speak slowly. Now I have no choice but talk slowly! Strangely, I have almost become more articulate since getting my voice disorder because now I choose my words more carefully and speak with more authority. If you need any advise on job interviews or anything like that feel free to email me at fhartman76@hotmail.com

i first started noticing symptoms at age 15, i'm 24 at the moment. I was diagnosed at age 21. Been getting botox for a year. So far i have gotten "good" result, wont say great because it does not take the tremor completely away. It is been really hard for me especially getting through college and raising a 2 year old little girl. I pray to God everynight to help me get through the next day, not knowing what my voice is going to bring.

I began feeling sick at age 24...no one could figure out what was wrong with me. Then 1 year later, I started having trouble on the phone at my job...my job where I answer a switchboard (200 calls a day). My voice was just dropping off on me on certain syllables, but yet when speaking in person it was fine. I went to an ENT and he said there was nothing wrong with me (story of my life with doctors). So I did my own research and came across ABSD. I made an appt with another ENT who told me how rare that was, but sent me to Mass Eye and Ear for a full work up. Well what do ya know, I was diagnosed with ABSD! I had my first botox shot a month later and it was fantastic! Well ever since that first shot, things havent been so good. I've switched dr's and I'm now at Boston Medical Center b/c my doc at the other hospital wasn't really listening to my concerns, and the subsequent shots weren't helping. It's now been over 2 yrs since my diagnosis. I am about to get a job as a police officer..I believe I start the academy in January..and I am CONSTANTLY worrying about how am I going to be able to talk on the radio, talk to other people, and worst of all...attempt to get through the academy without getting screamed at for my lack of voice. It is really difficult being young and dealing with this, especially when you are trying to start your career and people everywhere are giving you weird looks. My new doctor now injects me in the OR, and I'm up to 10 units. I had this done for the first time last month and it's been the best shot since I switched to him. I'm going to have it again next month on the other side and he's going to go up again on the dosage so I'll be curious to see what happens then. Until then, I struggle every day on the phone at work and with my clients. I feel my SD has gotten worse just over the last year, as I keep needing to go up in the dosage to find relief.

Hi I'm like 3 or 4 post below yours. I am 26 and have had sd for 3 to 4 years and it's been very hard to deal with. People can't understand me and look at me weird. People think I'm nervous, crying, or sound shaky. I choose to undergo surgery with dr.Burke and so far so good, waiting and hoping this is the answer to my prayers. Lmk if u have any questions ;)

Yeah--people used to always think I was a nervous wreck...This is pretty normal for untreated SD...I hope that Dr. Berke's surgery pans out for you...Renee

Hey Sarah, Im a 28 y/o male and have had ADSD since I was 14. its been a long ride and I know i'll continue to have my ups and downs in the future. I have given up botox and have ultimately accepted my condition for what it is. Ive made some big improvements since I was first diagnosed. I went from being a recluse to having finished community college and am getting ready to attend Humboldt State University. Im very nervous about it, but I cant see myself doing anything else. Its comforting to know that we aren't the only youngsters with this condition. take care Sarah,
