so here it is, I am so annoyed , I go to to a top Dr, in NYC, by first glance he says that it sounds like I got a paralyzed vocal chord, . Ok does his scope says it is not parlayzed, ok, talks to me a few times with the scope and then without the scope, he tell me that I have MTD, then says something about aphonia. He then tells me this is rarer then dysphonia and then he says I may have conversion aphonia (I believe that means it is "all in my head". Nothing could be more devastating to me. All in my head, yea like I dont want to have a voice, yea like I have lost my voice intermittely since my thyroid surgery. He was able to bring in his speech therapist and I was able to get a good "hum" and produce a few words, like I knew I could . I have done that with my local speech therapist. So now in his report his says that the vocal chords did not appear to fully adduct. His "Impression" was to strong favor conversion aphonia , but could not rule out vocal paresis or MS. Am I cray or am I getting mixed signals. thank you for letting me vent especially to people who have had voice disorders and as far as I know they have ruled SD. Please give me you opinions , Thanks |

I really wish that I had some insight into what is causing your condition. Unfortunately, I just can't even venture a guess. If I were you I would keep researching, going to doctors, and searching until I found some clearer answers or at least felt like I had left no stone unturned. If the doctors all believe, or at least suspect, that it's conversion aphonia, perhaps you could go to a mental health worker just to rule it out. From your post, though, it seems as if your gut instinct is telling you that "conversion aphonia" diagnosis is crap. I tend to trust my gut so if I weren't satisfied with that answer, I would keep researching. You did mention that your voice has been going intermittently since thyroid surgery. Any possibliity of nerve damage I wonder? I would be interested to know more of your symptoms if you feel like sharing. For instance, do you ever have any voice? When you say a few words in speech is your voice quality normal? How long has this been going on? Sudden or slow onset? Does it hurt to try to speak? etc. Anyway, hope you find some answers! I'm sure this must be so frustrating! |

losing my voice started a while ago. people say they remember it before my thyroid cancer, I remember it as soon as they started to do the biopsy's of the nodule. Removal of thyroid (2009) and went to the surgeon several times after surgery b/c of losing my voice. Voice would go out from time to time after that. Had gallbladder surgery in august. 3 days after that no voice. It has gotten better which leads me to believe that it is MTD. It seems to stay longer. Still have times that it is "Hoarse", that is the way it sounds form the beginning, only now the "hoarseness' sounds clearer. The surgeons report states that recurrent largenyl nerve was identified and it was dissected free and preserved. doesn't really hurt, although I can feel "choking feeling a tightening then I know i will not have a voice.
I thank you so much for you . My whole point here is that there were surgery's, inturbation, lose of voice, clearly saw that there was one vocal chord clearly not closing, so how could he say it was in my mind. ??????? |

Lexie, I can sympathize with the frustration. It took almost four years and as many doctors to get a diagnosis and I almost cried with relief! Is it possible that the doctor used the term "neurological"? This doesn't mean it's all in your head, it refers to the nerves that conect your brain to your vocal chords. In other words it refers to physical causes, not psychological. Have you looked on this site for referals? Many docs have little to no experience with dysphonia, but it doesn't seem to stop them from guessing! |
