On the phone today and this parent said I was the most rudest person she ever dealt with. I told her I was very sorry she felt that way and I had a voice disorder that makes me sound bad. She didn' care. After I got off the phone I cried. I know I need a shot but geezzz! Do I sound that bad?

The sad fact is that there are mean people in this world! I'm so sorry you encountered one of them. It is HER issue, not yours, and if it hadn't been you, it would be the next guy, maybe for having the biggest nose she'd ever seen or something ridiculous. Even if you do sound "that bad" it is absolutely no excuse for her behavior. You were courteous enough to explain your voice disorder - her lack of compassion shows her true colours. Miserable people will always try to make others miserable. The issue isn't how you sound. Don't let it get you down!

I know how you feel. With every call at work people are always telling me they can't hear me, I sound weird, something must be wrong with phone, I can't cutting in and out...people are really insensitive and it just makes you want to cry. Just remember-they don't know what's going on with us..and this makes us more humble and more appreciative of other people's disabilities

She's a sad, miserable person and not worth your time to fret over

I agree, you encountered a very rude person. I've had similar experiences on the phone at my office. I'm constantly asked what is wrong with my voice, after I explain most people are okay, some are empathetic and the conversation continues. However, I've had some people continue to ask me what is wrong, even after a short explanation, and I explain briefly again and they ask again. It's very frustrating, just know you aren't alone in this situation, be strong and know that there are lots of rude and ignorant people who do not understand.

i find that people don't respond very well to "I have a voice problem" or "voice disorder." I have no idea why. What seems to work better for me is "I have a neurological disorder that affects my speaking voice." This seems to get a more sympathetic response, and it's true as far as I'm concerned..

Sorry for a late reply but just getting onto this b-board.
I've dealt with SD for 24 years and educating others and leaving it in their court is the best you can do.
I've run into many rude and thoughtless people but it just shows how humility and peace with yourself is more important than what people think or say to you.
Being "born ignorant" is no excuse for being rude and thoughtless. Hold your head up and know that you can educate and teach people what true compassion really is.
