Breathing Paralysis during sleep

I recently experienced being in a deep sleep and being aware that I couldn't breathe. Some sort of sleep paralysis. This scared me to death, so I made an appoinment with my ENT. Meanwhile, I've been reading about this and found that most sleep paralysis is normal, and that sometimes the brain wakes up before the body. I know that SD is a condition that effects the smooth muscles in the body. Does anyone know if the muscles in the diaphram are smooth muscles? I always thought sleep paralysis occurs after a nighmare. I wasn't having a nightmare when this occured. Has this happened to anyone else?

I've experienced this numerous times. What is so strange is, I've also experienced this while awake. For me, the not breathing isn't like I HAVE to breathe, just that I notice I'm not breathing. I don't get that NEED to breathe, as if I had been holding my breath, just noticed that I wasn't breathing. I've already awaken, still not breathing, and had to make myself breathe. I have MS also, which resulted in brain stem damage, so that may be the reason. You should get a sleep study done to see if the cause is obstruction, or central (brain).

I have AB/SD & experience shortness of breath especially when I go to bed. I have experienced the paralysis a few times & immediately breathe through my mouth (which I'm not good at)

I think I just experienced this for the first time last night. I woke up in the middle of the night and couldn't breathe. I had to take 3 long gasps before my throat opened up and I could breathe. It was so scary...I hope I never experience that again!
