I think Dr. Berke's surgery without insurance is about $25,000...(At least is was a few years ago)...You might want to research what it would run with insurance...

Hi lucylee
I had surgery with Dr. Berke but my insurance paid for everything but a deductible. I have not heard of this laser surgery but I had a good result with my surgery.

Hi lucylee,

Are you talking about the laser surgery performed by Dr Su in Taiwan? I had that surgery four years ago and still have 90% of my normal voice restored even today. It has been very stable and I stay normal ever since. From the day after the surgery no one said anything about problem with my voice anymore.I have my life back, forgotten about SD and happily enjoying in my job that involves a lot of public speaking.

Hope this helps.

Cristal

Dear Cristal
Do you have a current address of Dr. Su in Taiwan (mail)? How long does one have to wait until a potential surgery?
Thank you for your answer & best regards!
Beat

Hi beat
I did some "googleing" and I think I found their address and email address.
Dr. Su Voice Beauty Clinic Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taiwan
email voicebeautysu@gmail.com
This surgery sounds promising and without the long recovery period I had. And maybe Cristal can correct me if Im wrong about the address.

Yes, the email address is correct. I had the surgery while Dr Su was still in Kaoshiung Chang Gung Hospital. Now he has his own clinic in Taipei. By the name "voice beauty clinic" what he means is to restore the voice we are born to have, something which should be a beautiful creation by itself. There is a website but it is in Chinese:

http://www.voicebeautycenter.com/

If you leave me your email address I am happy to share my experience.

Yes,the email address is correct.I had called dr.Su weeks ago,and the phone number is 886-2-27170695.Taibei time 5pm-7pm in work day he would be there.I think that he can speak English, because I've seen his research paper in English.

My doctor recommended this laser surgery in mainland China, and I'm not sure because I knew a girl who took this surgery twice in Shanghai but didn't work. Now she got another surgery by dr.Su two or three weeks ago.

There were two mainland patients that dr.Su introduced to me.I've contacted them by email. One of them said that she took the surgery around a year, and now she feels 70% recover.Another girl took surgery two months ago,and I had called her.I didn't know her before the call that I thought her voice was very clear and normal, but she said that her friends felt her voice a little deep and cracked. But this surgery needs three months to recover,so I think that she may get better later. That's all I knew about laser cricoarytenoid myectomy.

I am still interest in slad/r surgery which I learned from this site, but compare the cost and time of recovery I may give it up.

Good luck to you all!

Dear dennis, crystal and lucylee
Thanks a lot for the information! I'll check it out and report back when I find out something interesting.
Dr. Su published in 2007 a paper discussing short-term results (http://www.metroatlantaotolaryngology.org/journal/may07/ADSD.pdf). The same method has been documented since then by Dr. Tsuji in Sao Paulo ("Endoscopic Laser Thyroarytenoid Myoneurectomy in Patients with Adductor Spasmodic Dysphonia: A Pilot Study on Long Term Outcome on Voice Quality, Journal of Voice 2011), who reported a long-term study with very promising outcomes, and Dr. Akhtar Hussain from Scottland (Selective lateral laser thyroarytenoid myotomy for adductor spasmodic dysphonia, Journal Laryngol. Otol. 2010), also with very good results.
So this new approach might be worth to be studied a bit more.

The procedure in China I understand has had negative results. It is best to contact Anna Prus with Dr. Berke at UCLA via email as Dennis suggested. They can educate you about the different procedures. Dr. Berke perfected the SLAD-R surgery. The surgeon is more important than the surgery.

Is there any other email address can contact Dr.Berke or his assistant?
Thank you very much!

Hi Cristal
I'm very interested hearing more about your experience. How risky is the surgery? How many appointments did you have before the surgery? Could you speak again shortly after the surgery? Do you know how experienced the surgeon Su is? If you do not want to share this information here in the forum, you may write me a mail to beat.bernet@unisg.ch.
Thanks a lot!
Beat

I am an American living in China.I was diagnosed with ADSD at Mayo Clinic, Scottsdale in 2002. I came to China for business in 2007 and heard of Dr. Su in Taiwan at that time. Circumstances prevented me to learn more or meet with Dr. Su at that time. I returned to China in Jan. 2010 and have lived here ever since. I went to Taiwan to meet Dr. Su and check out his facilities, costs, procedure etc. in June 2013. I was highly satisfied and returned in November 2013 and had the laser surgery. I have achieved about a 75% to 80% recovery to a pre-SD voice at 3 months post op and I am gradually seeing additional changes. Dr. Su says that at 6 months post-op I will have the voice that will be as good as it will get at that time. I am satisfied with what I now have, so any additional improvement will be a plus, but not a requirement for me to be satisfied with my results. Dr. Su is highly skilled and has performed a little over 300 of these ADSD laser surgeries. To date there have been no adverse outcomes. Some patients get a better result than others, and the worst result was a 60% improvement. He began performing these procedures 9 years ago, and to date, no one has had a return of SD symptoms. He also treats ABSD, but uses an entirely different procedure. He is a throat specialist and has performed well over 3000 operations for many other types of voice issues. I am posting this because I read all of the posts and this may answer some questions that were asked. I am the first non-asian patient Dr. Su has ever treated, and he spent a lot of time with me explaining everything. If anyone is interested you may send me a private email and I can give details on every aspect, including costs, follow-up care, etc. that anyone wants to know about. I am also an Area Contact Person for NSDA in the China area. PS: Dr. Su practiced at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester, NY when he was younger and speaks fluent english.
