Hi, I was diagnosed with SD a week ago, after having mysterious and eventually severe on/off problems with my voice for years.
In that same appointment a week ago i was given the botox treatment. A couple days after the botox, the breaking in my voice went away although my voice was very breathy and raspy, all of which i expected. But the last 3 days, i have had NO voice. I can barely utter a word without incredible force and without looking like im going through some sort of conniption. I went to a social event today and it ended up being very difficult and embarrassing. I couldnt even get 'sorry i have no voice right now' out of my mouth. Is this a botox failure? has anyone else experienced this or knows why this has happened? thank you, John |

Side effect of the Botox.
What has essentially happened is the Botox has paralyzed your vocal cords. Try not to force your voice or you will end up with a secondary condition known as muscle tension Dysphonia. Let it be, it will come back. |

I had this happen a couple of times after my botox, and at the time I was working as a telephone prior authorization review nurse at an insurance company. I had to do paperwork only for a few days until my voice came back, and it was very soft for a while. Be patient. It will come back. |

I went through a similar experience with my first injection. My first injection was too much botox for me...everyone reacts differently. I have had much smaller doses subsequently and it has worked out much better. I am also involved in the clinical trial through Mt.Sinai and I am using Xyrem in conjunction with my botox injections and it is working well for me. I remember how frustrated I was following my first injection; I hope things are going better for you now. It gets easier as you know what to expect and plan for the voice changes. I am a college professor, so I usually wait and take my injections after the semester ends. |

thanks for the comments and advice everyone. Its now almost 3 weeks since my first injection, and thankfully, you were right, my voice has returned to decent levels. Took awhile, but its much stronger now, and the breaking from before is gone. I can now perform my job as i did before the voice problems. I dont know if ill have this 2 weeks of silence after every shot though, if thats the case, ill have to plan ahead work wise. |

One option that would help with the voice loss straight after a botox shot is to consider a unilateral injection - that is, to one vocal cord only rather than both. Also, your dose may need fine-tuning - with the first shot the dose is rather experimental but then you can adjust up or down in future as required. Good luck! David
