Julie, what exactly has your chiropractor been doing, just adjustments?

very interesting indeed...I have heard of people having mixed results with acupuncture, but I don't think I've ever seen chiropractic care discussed on the board before...It will be interesting to see the kind of responses you get to this thread...

The adjustments concentrate on the C3-C4 area, I seem to have more movement when my voice is at its worst. The chiropractor says that all neck problems begin between the shoulder blades so he also adjusts in that area. And yes, Twirler, that is all, just simple adjustments, I'm in and out in less than te minutes.

I have Cervical Dystonia [often called Spasmodic Dystonia]and not S.D. I do follow this Board very closely however, as before my treatment with botox began and my dystonia became under better control, I did suffer with significant voice difficulties. I aligned with much of what I read on here.
I believe my voice problems were as a knock on effect from my twisted neck impacting on my voice box and vocal cords. I still find that when botox wears off and my neck muscles begin contracting, my voice box "sticks out" from my throat and is mis-placed to the side. It then looks very prominent. So might it be the chiropractor success is taking away some of the surrounding neck muscle contraction away from your voice box.
Might it be you actually have cervical dystonia? Linda

I know a person who has had significant neck problems and his neurologist won't allow a chiropractor "to adjust" his neck. He only allows soft tissue massage. The cervical area affects all of the wiring to your entire body so as a precaution you don't want to mess around with it too much. My suggestion would be for you to consult with a neurologist first as chiropractors are not medical doctors.

After I saw this post I decided to try out a chiropractor. I went on Friday, had no results immediately, no results Saturday, but Sunday evening I sounded almost 100% normal. I was stunned. My good voice continued into Monday (today) with a few more spasms. I coincidentally had another chiropractic appointment and got adjusted again. We'll see If I get any results this time or if it was just a fluke.

Twirler, I'm glad it went well and I hope it continues. Chiropractic care has had some blotches on its reputation for some time. It is unfortunate, as the training and education is as rigorous and lengthy as conventional medical school. A good chiropractor can help with many afflictions that conventional medical care deals with, but without the drugs and invasive techniques. By the way, I am an RN. The more time I spend in conventional medicine, the more value I see in traditional health care.

Argh, this is what happens when I don't proof read! That last sentence is supposed to read "The more time I spend in conventional medicine, the more value I see in traditional health care." Linda, my voice problems stem from a repetitive work posture. I quit that job three years ago, but the effects have lingered on. At least that's what two of the three doctors I've seen believe. I haven't heard of cervical dystonia, it sounds painful,do you have trouble with swallowing as well? And Irish, without knowing more about your friend's situation, I wouldn't presume to suggest any other treatment, but as for myself, I feel that there are many options available to me besides Botox injections. While it has brought relief of the symptoms of SD to many, the side effects for me were more difficult than the symptoms of SD.

Yes, I hear you. I was not fond of botox injections either.

I tried chiropractic early on with three diffent chiropractors none of which helped. The only thing that made any difference was the botox and my eventual SLAD-R surgery in 2007.

Hi,what a wonderful discovery for you! The caution I can think of for myself before trying a method without research backing (to my best understanding there is only one small case study of chiropractic) is what a local speech therapist I know would ask: Has a diagnosis of SD been definitively given with proper medical testing? Other conditions can mimic SD, as I understand it. So it is good to know if it is indeed SD that was treated. Here is the chiropractic study of one person, not duplicated (to my knowledge) since: http://europepmc.org/abstract/MED/1919375/reload=0;jsessionid=l2o85qTH70xiaQicRFON.6 Personally, I tried chiropractic and acupuncture for months and dropped big bucks prior to Botox in the 1990's without any result. However, I really had no way to evaluate the skill of the practitioners, despite the high cost, or their knowledge of SD and ability to really treat it. When there was no result the acupuncturist said "The problem is too deep". The chiropractor offered no explanation. Personally, I would love to see scientific studies of any method that holds promise.
I also truly believe in traditional health care as an adjunct to conventional medicine because I think quality of life can increase with a focus on wellness and not only physical treatment but psychological/emotional, social, spiritual wellness which can also increase our quality of life. Studies do show positive improvement in quality of life with some chronic conditions with some psychological changes, and/or social changes such as seeking support.
