I'm seriously considering having the slad-R surgery with Dr Berke at UCLA. I would love to hear from people who have had the surgery and if they would to it all again. Thanks. |

Hi Jessie,
I had slad/r 14 months ago with Dr. Berke at UCLA. I would definitely do it again! |

I had the Slad-R surgery by Dr. Berke about 15 months ago. It was the best decision I could have made. Dennis and I spoke to each other during our recovery period. Glad to hear everything is going ok with you Dennis.
I would recommend going with the bilateral as opposed to the unilateral. From the research I've done the bilateral is more effective. Good luck to you. |

I had unilateral SLADR surgery by Dr. Berke in Aug 2010. I now have to get Botox injections again, on my still spasmodic side, but they are much more effective than prior to surgery. I do not have a breathy period at all...just a smoother sound after the shot. It's a big deal to do the surgery, and recover. My advice: do both sides!
Good Luck! |

I'm very interested in additional information since my overall experience with Botox has not been favorable. I'm curious if Dr. Berke's office obtains approval from the healthcare provider or is that patient's responsibility? How many consult trips to LA prior to having the surgery? How long is the surgery? Hospital stay? Places for family members to stay? Cost of the surgery? Recovery? Thanks! |

Hi Mary,
Dr. Berkes offfice did get approval from my Blue Cross insurance co. The only consult I had was a visit to Dr. Berkes office on the Monday before my surgery. My medical records were sent to Dr. Berke from my ENT. Surgery was about 3-4 hours on Tuesday morning and I stayed 2 nights and was dc on thursday afternoon. They want you to stay close by for a few days after the surgery. Most people stay at the Tiverton on campus. I dont know what self pay cost would be. The recovery can be described with one word.. slow. I was able to function pretty well though even in the first month. |

Gary Lea - Thank you for providing your e-mail address and certainly interested in whatever information you are willing to provide. I am interested however a bit apprehensive about the surgery itself. The doctor currently treating me at U of M does not promote the surgery however does know Dr. Berke and said if I decided to go that route, I should be treated by the doctor who pioneered the procedure. Regards |

I had unilateral surgery with Dr.Berke 3 yrs. ago.I regret not doing both sides as it was not successful.I have resumed Botox on the unoperative side & it is proving to be somewhat positive.
Good luck with your decision. |

Are there any males in their 30s who got the surgery done? I am considering surgery as well and would be interested in speaking with them. |
