"Chewbacca voice" after unilateral injection

Hi SD people,

I've had SD for 25 years and have been getting botox injections consistently for the past five years.

The most recent one was a unilateral injection of 3.5 units all into the right side. I normally get that same amount for bilateral injections.

It's been 3 weeks now, and my voice is coming back a little bit, but the tone is terrible. It's a very gravelly, fluttering tone like Chewbacca from Star Wars. I think there may actually be two competing tones instead of one clear one.

I have not had this kind of tone with bilateral injections.

Has anyone experienced this problem with unilateral injections -- do you think it would have worked better with a lower dose than the total bi-lateral dose?

Thanks,
Dwight

I consistently get VERY good results from the unilateral shots...Since I go once every three months, my voice sounds normal 95 percent of the time...Never heard of the Chewbacca voice, but as you know, everyone is different when it comes to SD...Good luck with your future shots....

I think you might be describing a phenomenon called 'diplophonia' where there is more than one pitch going on at the same time. Basically the vocal cords are vibrating out of sync.

I've experienced it several times but not always during the Botox recovery, and would describe the voice as gravelly. It didn't last long. There was no effort involved in voice production and I preferred it to full-blown SD.

3.5 units is a relatively low dose for unilateral, but I'm not sure what you describe would be dose-related.

Yes, that's exactly what it is. I did not know there was a word for it. It's starting to clear up on more now and the volume is pretty good.

Oh yes! Have it right now! So frustrating......I had a person tell me I came across as "timid" when I have this voice. I assure you I am not. Since I have dealt with this for 17 years, I think I have had every experience possible with the botox. Right now I get the "huh?"......and the puzzled looks....no one can "hear" me...and I get comments like "your hoarseness sure has lasted a long time"......"what can be done about that?" I really wish people would shut up some times. Anyway, I just made your post about me! (unintentional) Wonder if it's the strain of botox or where it "lands".....you have my Total empathy!
