There are times when I have a stiff jerky neck...and not sure if it comes with SD (the strain) or if it's just tension....which came first chicken or the egg sort of thing. Anybody else have that. I have noticed there is an SD tension. |

I know I sure tense up when I have to speak. It's hard to get over that when you have SD. Not unusual to adopt weird postures, either, when trying to speak. This could sure cause a stiff neck. Have you thought about spasmodic torticullis? Hope it's just a little muscle tension that is relieved by a warm shower and a couple of ibuprofen. Cynthia |

Yes Cynthia! I have thought about the torticollis (sp?) Thank you, I know I do feel like my neck just is still and like I can't even turn right at times...but nothing shows on x ray, and I know that there is that "fear" of how I'm going to sound. So not sure if it's just a case of carrying the tension in my neck or if it's something more as it comes and goes. It's really bad on interviews, especially panel interviews where I have to turn and look at people then I have a hard time facing the person directly in front of me...ugh... |

Tension in your neck could be that you are putting too much effort in speaking. When I first got SD, this was a problem I had. I would run out of breath, and I had a lot of tension in my neck area. A Speech Therapist can help you overcome your bad habit in speaking. |

OMG! Panel interviews, I'd forgotten about those. Probably cause it was horrible. I've only had one of those and hope I never have another. Good luck in your interviews, panel and otherwise. Job hunting is so hard even without the SD and neck pain. Cynthia |

So true Cynthia. Nothing like talking, dead silence and hearing scribble scribble between answers. Ugh! Pain in the nect (literally) :) and thank you, SD makes it soooo hard. |

Before I logged in I was thinking about the back of my neck hurting. I recently had shots and am still very breathy and straining to talk which can be stressfull when you have to communicate with someone. This all makes sense. Modified by DaveB at Wed, Feb 12, 2014, 14:58:21 |

Agreed. Often after a shot I have to strain to put out the vocals...neck is worse then |

I have SD and ST (torticollis). The SD showed up 1st; I was teaching middle school and after a bout with laryngitis, my voice never returned. Voice therapy did the trick for the 1st couple years but then was not enough. After a few years of resistance to the idea of botox, I tried it and it works!! My SD doctor at Vanderbilt actually diagnosed the ST after I mentioned my head stays in an abnormal posture all the time. She referred me to a motion disorder neurologist. Thankfully the torticollis is mild but it is like I have a "headache" in my neck most of the time. Botox works well for the SD but not for the neck. So I have joined spasmodictorticollis.org. The magazines and exercise DVD are very helpful. There are also groups on facebook. |
