Hello,
I have ABSD and was very frustrated as well receiving little or no benefit from botox shots. I had received them from a couple of well known doctors in Manhattan. I then went to Dr. C Michael Haben in Rochester, NY and with every shot I get improvement in my voice - nothing extraordinary, from a 2 to a 5 or 6. I moved to Florida and my doctor here called and spoke with Dr. Haben to learn his technique, which is through the front of the throat, through the cartilage - translaryngeal method I believe. Both sides are injected in the same visit. I have never had any side effects from the shots.
Where do you live? Dr. Bastian in Chicago treats AB as well with the same method.Kelly

Thanks for the response Kelly. I live in North Carolina and saw my dr in Charlotte today (Darrell Klotz). He said the botox did this time what it was supposed to do and he wants me to see a voice therapist to help me learn to deal with how my voice is going to sound now. I guess I just miss my old voice and have to learn to accept this is how it's going to be now. I'm learning a lot as it goes. It helps me a great deal to hear from someone who also has ABSD. My voice is still quite weak and I get out of breath quickly trying to talk. I know it's going to be a challenge to deal with. Thanks again, it helps to know others are dealing with the same thing.

Thanks Mary. My wife and I have talked about this support group in Charlotte. Our only concern right now is that we live about an hour and a half away near Morganton. We may very well make plans to join with you in an upcoming meeting.

My experience of getting shots, roughly every quarter, for the past 2 years is that the results are a little unpredictable. I get them in NYC (mt sinai) and have stretches of about 10 weeks with "good" voice. But the quality of the good voice can vary even with an experience doc giving the injections. I did try voice therapy but that doesn't help the underlying condition. It just taught me how to not exacerbate the tension.

Yeah, I think that is the idea of voice therapy my doctor talked about. I must update that over the past 2-3 weeks I've had the best voice I've had in a long, long time. It isn't what it once was, and never will be again, but it has improved from where it was. I was really discouraged after the injection because of the weak breathy laryngitis like voice but it has finally improved. After 4 injections finally a little light!

Thanks so much for the encouraging words. I had my last injection on June 15th and for 3 weeks or so not much voice at all. Dr Klotz suggested to me also to have voice therapy. I saw the therapist for an evaluation almost 4 weeks ago and she said she thought they could help me some with some therapy and they would be back in touch. I haven't heard anything since. How long did it take for them to get back with you? My voice has improved quite a bit from where it was but still struggle at times, but it is smoother than it was. Not very strong though. Thanks again & I hope you're voice improves.
