I have been diagnosed with Spasmodic Dysphonia. My ENT wants to do Botox.
Does Botox slow the progression or can I put it off until worse. Thanks |

No, Botox only provides temporary relief of the symptoms. |

I have had SD for 9 years but I am no medical expert. I've read that after you initially get it it can get worse over the next 18 or so months but beyond that it's not a progressive disease like some other neurological diseases. In fact I've heard that symptoms can get better over time as people gain a better understanding of what it is and through learning vocal techniques you can use to slightly lesson the symptoms. So I don't think there's any harm in not getting the Botox as long as your ok with not getting the spasm relief from the Botox. |

I don't think so. I am 80 yrs. old; have had botox for 10 yrs. and it hasn't worked for me for the last few months. This is quite discouraging. My age may be a factor in poor results. It has always been an "up and down experience" for me. It might work twice and then nothing twice. However, I've been thankful for it. I was told last wk. that I can try a procedure in the OR where I'd be anesthetized and dr. would insert longer needle thru the mouth instead of the neck. I would probably try this if I were younger. However, I have some heart issues, so will not follow up on this. |

I don't know about botox slowing the progression...What I DO
know in my case that I don't need to get botox AS OFTEN as I used to(I'm going on nine months between shots)...I have been getting these shots for twenty years, and my doctor said that possibly my vocal cords have atrophied after so many years of getting botox...Everybody is different, though...People have different experiences with botox and what does and doesn't work for them... It is my understanding from info from Boston doctors dr song and dr brooks, that Botox will help treat the symptoms of if the severity of sd, but does not change change the progression. I guess each case is individual and has a different impact on our voice. Hi |

Right, nobody knows; a rare disease with rare responses |

In my experience, the SD continues to get worse without the botox.
I have heard SD sufferers that are barely intelligible the first time they ever visited my Neurologist. Luckily I sought, and received, treatment before I got to that stage! How often you have to have the botox appears to be variable (from what I have read on this site). I have bilateral injections every 5 months. That seems the longest I can go between sessions ( I've had 26 sessions so far) Botox holds off the symptoms but is not a complete cure |

I don't know about botox slowing the progression of SD...What I DO know in my case is that I don't need to botox shots as often as I used to...This shot has gone ten months, and I am still serviceable...SD is such a strange disorder...People have different experiences with it...
