Hi everyone,I was reading some of the old most here on the BB and I think it was Barbara Woodring post that made me think of this. My SD began sort of like Laryngitis and each time it got worse. Upon first developing voice problems I had a lot of trouble with allergies, Gerd, Bronchitis and I had Mono twice. I also have ebstien barr virus.
I had to go to the doctor yesterday due to a bad attack with my allergies and learned again that I have acute bronchitis. So I was just wondering if others out there have experienced these things. And wondered if maybe these things could have caused my SD to develop as I was such a sickly person and had Mono, etc.
Any replys would be greatly appreciated. Regards, Jan
Re: Mononucelous & Voice Problems
Hi Jan,I had a diagnostic emg last week, and Dr. Koufman said that I had evidence of a post-viral polyneuropathy in the larynx. So viruses can affect your voice. In my case, the virus did not cause the SD, but is actually slowing down the adductor muscles and having a "partial botox" effect. Interesting topic, Jan. Anyone else on the board with post-viral neuropathy? Regards, Ed H.
Re: Mononucelous & Voice Problems
Hi Ed,Thanks for the reply. I just had a chat with a lady who said she developed mixed SD due to a virus and taking Nausea medication. I was wondering if others had experienced bad virus around the time their SD began. This will be interesting to find out if others have had these experiences. I think a lot of things went into play with my onset of SD, but really cannot pin point any one thing that caused SD. I've been through so much stuff that I forget just what all did happen around the time my voice got bad. Best Wishes, Jan
Re: Mononucelous & Voice Problems
My SD started after having the flu. I know of several people who had the same experience. SD can happen suddenly, and it can occur over a period of time. SD is a mystery condition, and at this point no one can understand what the cause is.

Re: Mononucelous & Voice Problems
|Hi everyoneI had no sign of any virus prior to gaining SD. Mine started off as a type of dystonia around the mouth and spread to the vocal chords a few years later. This happened when I was about 12 years old. So once I reached about 16/17 it ceased to spread any further. (Lets hope it stays that way)
Take Care

Re: Mononucelous & Voice Problems
Jan, my SD began very slowly. It was hardly noticeable for a long time. I knew there was something happening to my voice every now and then, but nothing that had alarmed me too much. I thought I was dealing with allergies. However, I developed a bronchial viral infection that settled in my chest. It took several rounds of different antibiotics and 6 weeks for the infection to heal. In the meantime, I continued working because it was a very busy time for us in the Special Education Department. I didn't think I could miss work for illness. I kept trying to talk on a daily basis when it was so hard to do so. After the viral infection went away, I then was in the stage of full blown SD. However, I did not know what it was. It was several years later before I was able to receive a correct diagnosis. I think you will find that many of us have these same beginnings in our backgroud. I have always wondered if it hadn't been for that episode, if my SD would have stayed in the background and just reared it's head from time to time, or if it would have happened anyway. Those things will never be answered. I still believe I have an inherited gene (although this hasn't been proven). If the infectin hadn't hastened it's onset, probably something else would have. Lylia
Re: Mononucelous & Voice Problems
My SD started after I had pneumonia, and then worsened over the course of 3 years, during which time I was also pregnant. My SD started becoming a problem in my eyes after the pneumonia, but became much more noticably worse when I became pregnant, so much so that other people were commenting on it. After the pregnancy, it stabilized as being just plain BAD, all the time.
My SD was certainly caused by a virus, there is no doubt in my mind.
