Whispering & use of microphones

Hello everyone,
I'm so happy this BB exists so I can ask fellow SD patients questions I cannot get answered elsewhere! I have severe spasms and find my only option to communicate lately is by whispering. The volume of my whisper varies - but is usually very low and people have to strain to hear me most of the time. I have two questions:
1) Does anyone else have the same experience - their only speaking option is to whisper? Does this do long-term damage to your vocal cords?

2) Does anyone use a microphone on a regular basis to increase the volume of their voice or whisper? I'm trying to find one that is portable so I can wear it at all times. Does anyone have a model they like?

I appreciate any information. I just had my first Botox injection but it doesn't appear to have worked and I'm trying to come up with ways to cope until I can try again.

Thanks a lot!
Darlene Dollard

Hi Darlene,

Welcome to the NSDA Bulletin Board. And congradulations on your first Botoxium Toxin Injection. I have had ADSD for 17 years now. I was only diagnosed in 1998. I have taken Botoxium Toxin Injections, Type A since that time. They worked for me a times and a lot of the time they didn't work for me. I have been without a normal voice this time around for 7 months. I have taken a series of 3 Botox Injections since November of 2000 and my voice returned to spasms back at the end of March. So, I have opted to have surgery.

I talk in a whisper because it is more comfortable for me, however as I understand it whispering is not a good thing to do. When I talk loader it is hard for people to understand me because my voice has so many breaks/skips. So, I understand your tring to whisper and it is more comforting to the throat, but is not good for you.

As far as a microphone goes, I have been recommended to use one and I have a couple of addresses and phone numbers you may want to check out to purchase one. However, before doing so I would check with your local phone company as sometimes they provide a phone voice amplifer without any cost.

The first one is a voice amplifier through a company called Luminaud Inc. 8688 Tyler Blvd., Mentor, OH 44060, phone 800-255-3408. The second one is a phone voice amplifier, purchased through HITEC Group International 8160 Madison Ave., Burr Ridge, IL 60521 phone (708)654-9200. Maybe this will help you in your search.

I too have severe ADSD. If I can be of futher assistance please let me know. Regards, Jan

Hi Darlene, I use a microphone to teach. I teach elementary school and basically my voice is a whisper. (I have ABSD.)At first I just went to Radio Shack and bought a hand held mic, ut decided I needed myhands to teach.

I purchased my Honeytone Voice Enhancer with behind the head microphone from Communicative Medical INC. in Washington state. I chose them becuase I live in the west and thought it might be faster than the Luminaud company in Ohio. At their website you can see pictures and prices. I am thinking of getting a smaller unit although it would be for use at home and in small groups. For teaching I don't know if the smaller unit would be loud enough. Communicative Medicaal and Luminaud had about the same items if I remember correctly. I just bought mine in January. I am definiely going to get an amplified telephone this summer.
Hope this helps, Katrina

If you call the phone company they can send you a information on a amplified phone. I paid 65 dollars and it is great! They take the dollars out of the phone bill to pay on it so that works out great!

Hello Katrina,

I've been wanted to respond to this thread. Do you know the number, or email address, or city of Communicative Medical, Inc. I'm very interested in acquiring a small body mic, so that my voice will be more audible. I did purchase one of the Hitec Voice Amplifying phones shortly after I had Dr. Berke's surgery last Oct. It helped some, but I don't think it was worth the $99 I paid for it. Look forward to hearing from you. Thanks. -Joan
