Baltimore ENTs Perform Second SLAD-R surgery

As some of you may know who are not new to the BB, I am almost a year beyond Dr. Berke's surgery and have had marvelous results from it. My ENT from Greater Baltimore Medical Center, Dr. Andrew Goldstone, accompanied me to LA and, with Dr. Berke's permission, observed the two surgeries scheduled for August 8, 2000. In the year since I have regained a normal speaking voice, and Dr. Goldstone and his associate, Dr. Dario Kunar, have been preparing to do the surgery as surgeons do, by working with several cadavers and perfecting the procedure. In the last two weeks they have performed successfully two SLAD-R procedures with SD patients, and both have come through the surgery beautifully, gone home after one day and are now in that infamous breathy stage that will, we all hope, gradually be replaced with a life-long stage called normal. Dr. Goldstone makes it a practice to advise all of his patients about this website and the value of this community of supporters. He and Dr. Kunar are both very competent young surgeons, and very personable men, who have worked closely with SD patients, and I'm excited that they have chosen to offer this surgery on the east coast. If you would like more information about their practice, the address is The Physicians Pavilion East, 6565 N. Charles Street, Suite 601, Baltimore, MD 21204, and the office phone number is 410-821-5151. Does this sound like a paid commercial advertisment? It's really not, but I do think that those with SD who are interested in learning more about the option of surgery should know that they don't have to travel to Los Angeles to be in very competent hands. If I can share my experiences with any of you more privately my email address is iewhite@ssu.edu. Gene

Gene,

August 8, 2000 must have been a really good day for SD surgery! For those of you who don't already know,I was the other surgery patient observed by Dr. Goldstone on that day. Like Gene, I am very pleased with my voice after Dr. Berke's surgery. Don't think I have as much volume as Gene but no one asks about my voice anymore and I find myself forgetting about it more all the time and feel like my old self again after almost nine long years. It was good to meet you, Gene, at UCLA and I am so happy for you even if you did get to go first. (Just kidding). Like you, I wish everyone could have good results and I feel very fortunate. So glad to hear about other doctors learning the procedure and more can take advantage of the surgery if they choose to do so. For me, it was a "GOOD thing!!" I was also glad to hear about Dr. Blumin moving to Philadelphia. That's much closer for me if I need help in the future with my voice. He was a great help at UCLA and so quick at answering all my questions after surgery by email. My former ENT in Indianapolis, IN is thinking about learning the procedure also. That would be great too. I have a friend who is interested in the surgery if he chooses to learn and perform the SLAD-R surgery. Not having the expense of traveling so far would be a big plus. Barb

Thank you!! I live in the Baltimore area and have had very little luck finding a doctor who will consider anything but botox. I am not sure that I am ready for surgery but I am certainly ready for a doctor with a personality :-)

Thanks again

Lisa

Hi,
I had the vocal chord surgery for SD in 1990 and it was a dismal failure. I would not recommend this type of surgery because the condition returns and your vocal chords have been cut up making your voice worse than it was when you started.
