Re: Sandy - PAIN IN THE NECK!!
I think she was referring to "circumlaryngeal massage" (around the larynx/voice box), also known as "Manual Laryngeal Muscle Tension Reduction Techniques", pioneered by A.E. Aronson, and added to by others. Some excellent Speech Pathologists (but not enough of them) are experienced at this interesting and often helpful massage technique, that has helped patients who have either Spasmodic Dysphonia (SD) or Muscle Tension Dysphonia (MTD). I've read that some patients have been MISdiagnosed as having SD, but actually have MTD. There's a very technical article about this MANUAL technique. The article is called "MUSCLE TENSION DYSPHONIA AND SPASMODIC DYSPHONIA: The Role of Manual Laryngeal Tension Reduction in Diagnosis and Management" by Nelson Roy, MCLSC, Charles N. Ford, M.D., and Diane M. Bless, PhD, (Madison, Wisconsin). Here's a link to this important article: http://www.stic.net/users/ta2man/distonia.html Sincerely, Carol

I would still like to hear from all of you if you remember having or now have any sharp pains in your neck. I have had them for years and am still having them once in awhile.
Re: PAIN IN THE NECK!!
Hi Sandy,
I started getting sharp pains in my neck about 6 months prior to my SD symptoms. The pains that I am talking about are quick, sharp pains that feel like a pinched nerve or something (not that I know exactly what a pinced nerve feels like!) It usually happens when I turn my neck and try to talk at the same time. I definitely think there is a connection, maybe it has something to do with overly-tensed neck muscles or something..who knows. Since sppech therapy and relaxation exercises, it doesn't happen as frequently, but it still happens. Another mystery to add to the list!
Let me know if any of this rings a bell!

Re: PAIN IN THE NECK!!
This is all very interesting to me. About the same time I started losing my voice, I also started experiencing tingling hands and feet. Of course, my doctor was very concerned and sent me to see a barrage of specialists. Turns out that in addition to having SD -- I also have a herniated disk between the #5 and #6 vertebra -- right behind my larynx. My neurologist says that the herniated disk was contributing to the tingly hands/feet, but had nothing to do with my voice problems. My ENT is convinced that this problem IS contributing to my voice problems in some way. The voice specialists I've seen (two, so far) don't think it is connected...just coincidental.I think the ENT is right. But who really knows?
Re: PAIN IN THE NECK!!
I have had neck and upper back spasms for 4 years, 10 or 12 per day lasting 15 to 30 min each. I've noticed in the last year that during and after these painful spasms, my voice changes, becomes very rough, 'scratchy', and others have noticed it too. I had thought it was from extreme stress of the spasms. During spasms, there are two very sore spots in throat area; low on both sides and up under the jaw on both sides; two very hard, tense spots on each side. The spasms involve back, shoulders, down arms, across chest, neck and lower jaw. I have never mentioned the voice difference to the doctor; considered it just a side effect of pain. I see now it may be a natural result of muscle spasticity. I take Zanaflex which was prescribed by a Neuro at Cleveland Clinic last Dec 2000. Zanaflex helps greatly, but is losing it's effectiveness. The cost is going up and up; now $140. per mo. Don't know what I'll do when it doesn't work anymore. Maybe there will be something new by then. Something 'cheap' would be nice.... ha ha Pain meds are NO help at all. Pat
