My wife is considering deep brain stimulation surgery for her cervical dystonia. Have any of you had this surgery, and with what results?

Hello "Econoway"

The overwhelming majority of readers and posters to this NSDA bulletin board have spasmodic dysphonia - which is the voice that results from a type of focal dystonia - ie laryngeal dystonia - and this affects the vocal cords primarily. DBS is not a recommended procedure for SD. No patient with SD as their main symptom has had DBS to the best of my knowledge.

In most publicised dystonia cases, DBS has been used on patients with severe generalised dystonia - and in a very few cases of cervical dystonia I believe.

A good forum to ask your question would be the DMRF bulletin board (link given below) or the NSTA message board at www.torticollis.org

Best wishes
