SD and pain in neck

Hi there,

Am wondering if anyone out there who has been diagnosed with SD gets pain in their neck. This is a recent occurrece for me over the last couple of weeks. First noticed it when I tried to turn my head when driving my motorbike,my neck felt really stiff and was difficult to turn. Didn't think too much about it at first, but this last week it seems to have got worse. When reading or using the pc, my neck starts to ache after a while and I have to consciously lift my head up. Even my crash helmet sometimes feels to heavy for my head. The aching seems to be in the back and sides of my neck and shoulders and top of back. Have also had pain in my right hip for quite some time, but just put that down to getting older lol.

I find if I prop my head up against something it relieves the pain. It sounds ridiclous but i have found if I tie a thick scarf around my neck that helps too.

Can anyone enlighten me any further on this ....... am thinking that maybe I need to go back to my neurologist, but last time I saw him and told him I was soo tired, he said this had nothing to do with the SD ..... so am starting to feel like a hydrochondriac !! ..... will give it a bit longer amd maybe it will just go away !

Thanks for your help,
Snowie x

Hello Snowie

In some cases, unfortunately, people with SD (that is, laryngeal dystonia) go on to develop other forms of dystonia. These include cervical dystonia (neck and shoulder area) - which is also known as spasmodic torticollis, or ST for short.

If your neurologist is a movement disorder specialist he should be open to this possibility. He is probably right about the tiredness, but have you mentioned these new symptoms?

Dear Snowie,

SD can be more than one kind of pain in the neck!

I had symptoms similar to yours and also was relieved in similar ways. I worked with doctors - a group of orthopedists, neurologists, and chiropractors who work together - and learned that I was holding the muscle tension I use to speak, principally in my trapezius muscles, even when I wasn't speaking. This led to my shoulder posture being off by a fraction of an inch, which led to a variety of other circumstances and aches and pains. The doctors showed me how to stretch, and coached me about how to release unnecessary muscle tension. Muscles in my neck still sometimes get a bit tired from speaking, but I'm pain free as long as I do the stretches and attend to not tensing muscles when I don't need to.

Echoing David's advice, talk to your doctors. Pain is the body's signal that something is wrong.

Best wishes,
Linda

Hi Snowie,

the same thing happened to me and as David said Dystonia sometimes movies to other areas of the body. I get such painful spasms in my neck that I get headaches so severe that I've even gone to the E.R. I now get injections in the back of my neck and the sides. This really helps alot. The only time that I've had a problem is if the doctor gave too high of a dosage of botox. I get injected every 3 months regularly. Talk to your doctor about this if it gets too painful or bothersome, see what he/she says.

Hi folks - thanks for your responses .. you have no idea what a relief it is to talk to people about all of this.

Am struggling abit getting to grips with it, and managing my job. Had an appriasal for work today and things aren't looking too good, my manager has 'concerns', re: my latenss, not producing enough work, and sickness. The irony is that I work really hard,
in fact feel like I have to climb a hill every day ... and am really trying my best ..... and my output and sickness levels are probably just as much as the people I work with. I just feel have to work twice as hard to keep up, and I still get pulled up... and I am sat here, having come home from work, feeling really worn out, and my neck is killing me.

I'm going to have to make some changes ... just need to work out the best way forward ....

Thanks for all your advice,
Snow xxxx

Snowie, I recently experienced severe pain along the side of my neck that seemed to come out of no where. I get a lot of stiffness throughout my neck and body. I'm not always sure which of my ailments is causing what with me. Frustrating!!!

I don't know if I would say I have pain in the neck but I sure have tightness in my neck. Yoga helps some if I go regularly and so do massages. I just had a massage last week and she said my left side was really tight. I tighten shoulder muscles because I think it helps me talk.

Hello Snowie,

I have some neck pain, especially when reading, using pc, etc.

I believe alot of this is related to having a strained/choked voice and the muscles in the neck and shoulder tighting due to having such an effort to talk. It could be alot causing this as well as stress. Of course we all know that stress is the #1 answer regarding most aches and pains, however I would not take any chances. I would say check it out with your doctor. I have surgerically corrected ADSD as well as other medical/pain problems. I don't know if you have ever heard of it or if anyone here is dealing with it, but FIBROMYALGIA could be a possible cause since you mentioned pain in your hip too. I have dealt with chronic pain and FIBROMYALGIA now for 4 to 6 years. I also have a tear in one of my disc and buldging disc in my lower back and my neck. Being tired could also be due to FIBROMYALGIA. And having too make such an effort too talk with SD could cause muscle tension. Another thing I experience is clenching my jaws causing pain in my jaws. I've not had a thourgh diagonis from this problem, however I've heard it is a symptom or medical problem related to FIBROMYALGIA. NO, IT IS NOT RIDICLOUS AND YOU ARE NOT A HYPOCHONDRIAC! Just felt I should comment on your post regarding SD and Pain. SD and Pain is a pain in the neck in more ways than one.

My Regards & Best Wishes,
Janet

I have always had sort of a stiff neck. I can actually hear the grinding in my neck when I move my head from side to side. I remember there were some stretching exercises that were recommended at one time. I guess that is why my problem has been diagnosed as Muscle Tension Disorder (MTD) rather than full blown SD? I always wondered if I could relax those muscles in my neck, if that would help with my voice.

I had pain in my neck before the SD really got started. I thought it was from working on the computer too long, went to a good Chiropracter who took an X-Ray that showed my head was rotated to the right and tilted back. I have both osteoporsis and spinal curvature. He helped a lot putting things back in place but like most things it doesn't last long. I was thinking of getting more treatments though to see if it will help the SD.

It's amazing how so many SDers also have neck pain. Lately my neck has tension. Plus I have pain in my right arm, but it could be a pulled muscle (working out in the gym).

I'm getting symptoms I've had before and went away: Intermittent head-shakiness. Comes and goes. Lasts for maybe 5 seconds, in different periods of the day. I've seen it described here before...the classic "no-no" shake. Only mine tends to nod up and down. (It's usually not very noticeable). The shakes are worse than 5 years ago when I had them, but less frequent. Go figure. Could be stress, or related to the neck tension...hopefully not dystonia spreading. My voice has tremor and the neurologist thought I may have Essential Tremor, so maybe it's related.

The other sympton is lightheadedness. Seems to aggravate the head-shaking spells. Hopefully it'll resolve like before.

Anyone else going through this?
