Botox injections for AB SD

Hi there again,

Here I am with a 101 questions !

I have had 3 injections so far for AB SD. The first two were 2 weeks apart, one either side of my neck. The speech pathologist told me I would need at least 4 injections before I see any improvement. But then after the 2nd injection, the doctor booked me in for another one in 3 months time, which turned out to be 5 months, due to cancelled clinics.

I went for my third injection last week, end of Jan. And when I asked the clinic nurse about the next one, he said I don't have to go again for another 3 months. With AB SD, is this the normal procedure ? ... I thought I would need to go again before this, sp they could inject the other side of the muscle, as they have only injected one side of my neck ?

Also, interestingly, the first one seemed to work, the 2nd didn't have much effect, and so far, although its been just under a week, the third one doesn't seem to be having much effect either.

Thanks for your help, Snowie

I also have AB and, I think a similar pattern of injections. I had an injection on one side of the neck and then came back 2 weeks later for the other side and then 3 months later did the same pattern. In the begining I also went in after the second side to have a scope to make sure things were working properly. Sometimes the 2nd shot stretched to a bit longer. I never had one side and then waited 3 months to do the other side. Are you sure the doctor remembered what order you were doing? My doctor always had to look in the chart to make sure what side he was doing that day. I seem to be in remission - haven't had an injection since March 2003- still have days when my voice does't work properly but the next day I usually back to normal. Whatever normal is!

Hi Katrina,

Well I did wonder if he remembered the order he was doing, (particualy as he seemed a bit preoccupied as he was sooo busy), and the nurse called me by the wrong name after the injection), thats why I wanted to query it here. He also gave the botox injection in a different place, more to the front of my throat, rather than the side of the neck, so it did cross my mind that he may have made a mistake and given me the injection for AD SD.

Interestingly enough I haven't had any effects at all from the botox, accept being alitte out of breath, and its been nearly a week. I will call the Clinic on Monday and see what they say.

I am glad for you that you are in re-mission ...... thats
good news and makes me ever hopeful that things can change for others.

Best wishes, Snowie

Hi Snowie

When I had my first injections in NY, it was to the PC muscles - and it had little to no effect for me. I was subseqently recommended to another doctor in SF who had an alternative theory and he injected my CT (chrico thyroid, think spelling is a bit off )muscles and it worked for me. I have since then only injected my CT muscles - but having said that not every injection is equally effective - some are better, some are not great - cause the CT muscles are suppose to be quite a large set of muscles and since the injection is done "blind", the doctor doesn't always get the sweet spot. I usually inject both sides in one go.

Hope that helps

Your treatment doesn't sound very methodical. The first step is to find the correct dose. Also, one needs to decide whether to inject both chords or just one. Abductor injections are more difficult, so perhaps the possiblility of missing the target is greater. If the injection is going to help, you should know within two weeks or less.
