Re: SD Surgery At Vanderbilt In Nashville? Dr. Netterville?
Hi Betty,I am a former patient of Nashville Vanderbilt Voice Center. However, I've only been seen by Dr. Courey, Dr. Garrett and Dr. Stone. I took Botox Injections there. I think Dr. Nettersville is a Male, but not sure could be wrong. I don't know if he/she is even still in practice, I'm thinking may have retired, but again not sure. They are wonderful doctors there. I personally liked Dr. Garrett. Of course they are all wonderful and nice doctors and really know there stuff on SD. They recommended RLN surgery for me, but I choose not to have that surgery. Basically because of others opinion and the possibility of the Spasms re-occuring and not being able to possibly have furture surgeries, treatments or procedures. And even though I am happy and satified I choose to have the RE-DE surgery. I guess there will always be a fear of the unknown furture. Because to my knowledge No one knows the long term effects of this surgery, however, I am confident and hopeful that it will last. Anyway getting back to the Thyroplasty surgery, I'm sorry I can't answer your question as to whether or not this doctor does this type surgery or not. But I just wanted to say I've been to them and they are good. I understand there are a number of folks who have had good results and are very satified with the Thyroplasty surgery. I do hope it will be effective for you. Best of luck. Jan Joiner - Alabama
Re: SD Surgery At Vanderbilt In Nashville? Dr. Netterville?
thank you, Dr. Netterville is a noted throat surgeon, especially for cancer patients, at Vanderbilt. Dr Courey has chosen not to do the surgery at this time. The doctors at the voice center take a conservative approach, which is good. However, I have questions as to why so much is being done in other areas of the country with surgery, and not at Vanderbilt, which is one of the leading research medical facilities in the country. That is the reason for my post. I believe if/when the surgery will be done at Vanderbilt, Dr Netterville will be the chosen surgeon. I have learned - like all of you- we must do our own research and ask questions, hopefully, to receive answers our doctors are not always willing to give. I plan to meet with Dr Netterville. SD is such a personal disease, each one is different, with some of the same patterns. This BB is such a blessing.

Hi Betty:
As a skeptic, I would prefer the conservative approach and have much more confidence in a surgeon that took that stance, rather than one that just jumped on the bandwagon to make the big bucks.

Re: SD Surgery At Vanderbilt In Nashville? Dr. Netterville?
I agree, it's better to have a cautious surgeon, they are usually the ones waiting for further stats and longer term info before they proceed. it took me months to talk my ENT into performing the Thyroplasty type 2, and I am very happy with the result - a litle breathy but no spasm and minimal effort. My ENT conversed with others around the world and got videos of the procedure etc to show me before he'd even consider it. Now he has done over 10 patients here in Adelaide, South Australia, and more have been done in Sydney. Some people don't like their voices, and go back to have the shims changed (in size) or taken out. That is the, beauty of this option (well for me anyway), it hasn't taken away any future otions and has allowed me to get a good job and live a normal life (whatever that is!!).
I have forgotten what it's like to be afraid of the phone or not to want to speak up - like being 17 again (that's when I got ADSD).
If you want to ask more questions about the surgery feel free to e-mail me.
Cheers
Narelle
