You might be interested in listening to this segment - clip no. 13 - on NPR. It is about Dr. Zeitels and Julie Andrews' effort regarding voice restoration. You have to go to "previous shows" and then August 2002. For some reason, the 16th isn't available right now, but maybe they will make it available later. John

Hi, all,

I caught this segment when it aired originally -- very well done, very informative...but they completely missed the chance to include SD among the causes of voice dysfunction. I sent Margot Adler, the person making the report, an email on this topic, expressing my hope that they would do some sort of follow-up and pick up on Diane Rehm (carried on many NPR stations) as their high-profile person to feature in the piece. I suggested it might be a good thing to tie it to one of the patient symposia, perhaps the one in DC in March 2003 (since they are based right outside of DC).

Anyone else hear this and have any thoughts?

Hi Linda

Yes, I was thinking the same thing. Wanting them to in clude SD among the disorders. It seemed that most of the surgeries they were talking about, however, actually addressed the cause not the symptom as do surgeries for SD. I was interested in the reference to laser surgery. Hope that is something the Doctors, treating SD, are looking into.

Thanks John for keeping us informed.

When I saw Dr. Zeitels name it got me to do some digging as he is my former Dr. in Boston.

Came across the attached site that some BB readers might want to bookmark. Dr. Zeitel is one of the best voice Doctors in the US and would not be surprised if he is the one that finds the next treatment or cure.

As I went through this site and listened to the NPR broadcast, it seems clear that SD is the "stepchild" of voice disorders. It is not "sexy" like the Julie Andrews angle so I am sure that we will always take a back seat. We also don't have a famous face with our disorder like Parkinson's has with Michael J. Fox.

My guess is that some of this other research will eventually help with SD, but any impact to us is probably 10 years away.

Thank you for this site. With the problems I have encountered, Dr. Zeitel may be my hope for a normal voice and being able to breath, too. John
