My voice seems to be returning to normal! I took botox six months ago and it has now worn off. My voice began to spasm again. But now my voice is much imporved. He is what I have been doing. 1. Becase of acid reflux, I have quit eating so much. This has greatly imporved the couging and clearing of throat. Also, I am suffering much less from migrane headaches which leads me to point 2. 2. I have quite taking Zomig, which is a medication for migrane headaches.

As I think back over the past 2 years (the time period that SD developed) the only thing that changed was that a doctor prescribed Zomig for migrane headaches. I am now believing that this caused my AD/SD. I could be wrong, but my voice is very much improved and seems to be getting back to normal.

Anyone else have a similar experience?

Larry Smith, AD/SD.

This post was so interesting to me, Larry. I too suffer from migraine headaches and have been taking alot of fiorinal in the past few months... is that klike zomig? Now I'm wondering if that could be delaying my progress. I have been going to a speech therapist once a week for 4 months now, but can't see any great improvement. My speech therapist still thinks it may be a tight vocal cord problem, so she has taught me new techniques for talking...rather whispering. I myself do not see any great improvement. I also have acid reflux so will try eating less if that's possible when under stress...ha Will keep you posted on my progress. Thanks, Marilyn AB/AD in Texas

Thanks for your post. I'm not sure if the medications are similar or not. But I can say that my voice is better today than it was before my botox shot, better than at any time that the botox was in effect and better than it was a month ago. I am going to pay close attention to the relationship between acid reflux, migraines, and SD. It seems to me that since SD is neurological, that anything affecting the brain could be a contributor to SD. I believe that the migraine medication could be a contributor. I have elimated just about everything else. Over the past 3 years I gained about 35 pounds (did a lot of before bedtime eating), I developed a cough that kept me up at night. Sometimes I did more eating then (or drinking tea or coffee). The cough persisted. Went to see an ENT who did a cat scan. Said everything looked normal, then refered me to allergist. Allergist gave me shots. I told the allergist that I was also having "sinus headaches". He said it sounded more like migraines to him and prescribed the Zomig. It was about this time that the spasams began. Finally went back to the ENT. She said she thought I had SD and sent me to specialist. Got the first shot. Hated it. Did not have much voice for 2 months. Since nothing I was doing or that doctors were doing to me seemed to be acceptable, I decided to use some common sence. I decided that if acid reflux could be a contributor, I would just have to make a decision to stop over eating and loose weight. I did this successuflly. I have lost about 25 pounds of what I gained. The headaches have almost gone away. Over the past month or so, I haven't taken any of the pills. Now the voice seems to be improving. Keep me posted of your progress. I'll be interested to hear how it comes out. Larry Smith, AD/SD.

Larry, how long after you got off the migraine medicine and the improved acid reflux, did the SD get better. I have been dieting and lost 12 lbs so far but had another migraine this weekend so haven't stopped that yet. I'm hoping by getting some weight off, that the reflux will improve. Hopefully the migraines will too, and then I can see a difference as you have. Anything that will help is worth trying. Thanks for the information and keep up the good work.

Before I came to my sences on my eating habits I was have a lot of difficulty coughing. In particular, at bedtime. Once I reduced my food intake, especially at night, the cough dissapeared. My voice improved I would guess within 2 or 3 weeks. Also the migraines happen about once or twice per month insted of 5 to 6 times per month. And the headaches are not as severe. I can normall use motrin, a hot compress over my forehead, and just suffer through it. If it helps the voice, I am willing to do a little suffering in that area. So to answer your question, the improvement in coughing and voice happened within 2 or 3 weeks. My one and only botox shot was on March 1. As it began wearing off, my voice was cracking much more so than it is now. So using that as a baseline, I am sure that my voice has improved. The only things that have changed are as I mentioned, diet and medication. I am not a doctor so I am just experimenting with anything that helps. So far it seems to be helping. I used to have a fairly noticable sore throat which I believe was from the acid reflux. If the acid was strong enough to do that, it had to have had an impact on my vocal cords, I think. Hope that answers your question. I wouldn't encourage anyone to discontinue taking any medication. I am just sharing my experience. Larry.

Larry... That is wonderful that your voice has improved so much! I agree with you 100% on eating. When I overeat my voice gets worse too.

I have cut back on my eating and my voice is so much! much! better.Good luck to you on continued success!
