Hi,I've posted this message on the dystonia bb. Now I'm posting this message on sd bb. Is there anyone out there, who has had adductor surgery, (thyroplasty)? My vocal cords squeeze together. Dr. Maragos ENT and Dr. Strand (speech pathologist)have said that I would be a good canidate for thyroplasty surgery. For those who have had this done. Please write me back. I curious to know the success rate. Thanks Antonella |

Dear Antonella, I wrote to you on your personal e-mail address 2 days back in response to your query abt Thyroplasty surgery. Maybe the message did not reach you. I have ADSD and last December, had lateralisation thyroplasty Type 2. (Type 1 refers to medialisation thyroplasty which is more for ABSD.) For me, the surgery has given me back my life, I am now able to talk without spasms and tremor. The only thing abt the surgery is that it leaves me with a slightly hoarse voice all the time but this I gratefully accept in exchange for all the pain and suffering we SD sufferers endure everyday of our life. There is another person who has had this Type 2 surgery way before me and she is also doing well. She is Narelle Lehane from Australia and in fact, she was the one who encouraged me and allayed a lot of my fears about having the surgery. Every surgery carries a certain degree of risk and what works for one person not necessarily will work on another. You have to talk it through with your doctor, weigh all the pros and cons and decide if the surgery is for you. For me and Narelle, we are two very fortunate people who benefited from the surgery. Nobody can tell us the long term effect of this surgery but we take it one day at a time and so far, so good. (Narelle, where are you?) Kristie Yap (ADSD)

Kristie (and Narelle), LOL! Narelle is out there someplace, Kristie. She always says she has other things to do with her daughter and her family. Don't we all? LOL! Busy folks we are. Keep posting info on this thyroplasty procedure because it differs dramatically from the RLN and SLAD, in that it is *reversible* but it still resolves immediate vocal issues. I was very impressed with the information we received at the Arizona SD Symposium last March, from Dr. Nicolas Maragos of the Mayo Clinic, in regard to this procedure that you two have had. For the doctors to be able to *tune it* (mid-process) while the patient is awake and talking and being able to reverse it is a MAJOR plus. Sounds good to me. Good to see you back on the BB, Kristie, and to know your voice is working well. Keep on posting and giving updates, OK? --Lynne (AD/SD; Northern California) |

If you page through the bulletin board you will see postings related to the surgery you are considering. I am a patient with Dr. Maragos at Mayo and have had the surgery. I would be happy to respond to you off the bulletin board and via the phone (although we all hate the phone). I think all cases are different. What might work for me might not work for you. Since this is a reversible surgery and not very complicated I would seriously consider it as an option. I am still trying to find the level of Botox that will help me after Thyroplasty. It has been almost a year and we are still experimenting with the dosage level. John Comer ABSD Minnesota |

Hi John, I'm sorry to hear that you haven't had as much success as you had hoped.
How's your breathing been since you had the surgery? As I recall the
