To all SDers w/Acid Reflux--Question

After reading a recent post re. GERD (Acid Reflux), I have an intriguing question:

If you have Reflux along with your SD, which came first...the SD, or the Reflux?

With me, the AB SD came first. About 7-8 years later, the GERD gradually came on. Just enough to let me know I have it.

There's the theory that SD causes (or worsens) Reflux, as you use your abdominal muscles more to talk, aggravating the digestive system. There's also the concept that traces of acid in the esophagus can seep back down into the vocal cords, causing more irritation and spasms. (what a nasty cycle...if you have GERD). Some of us have this problem, and others don't.

Also, who among us w/ Reflux is AB, and who is AD?

I had GERD first, several years before onset of ABSD. In fact in the beginning when I was searching for an answer to my voice problems, the doctor was fairly certain the hoarseness was caused by acid reflux even though I was having no reflux symptoms at the time. If only that had been the case, the Prilosec would have taken care of the supposed reflux and I'd be talking now!

I've just recently discovered that I have acid reflux. I have AD/SD

Not sure how long I've had it since the symptoms weren't too obvious, but I've been getting lots of cavities lately and my dentist suggested that I might have it. So I'm pretty sure the SD (which I've had since '90) came first.

I began to show early GERD symptoms a year or more before the onset of my AB SD, which began after a severe upper respiratory infection with much coughing. When I went to an ENT to see what was wrong with my voice, he diagnosed the GERD from the condition of my throat & larynx (and from asking me questions). The Prilosec, then Nexium, along with diet changes, did remove the visible evidence of damage from GERD (though I do still have some symptoms: that "little purple pill" is no miracle drug for me). That's when I was referred to a spch path., who had experience with AB folks including our Bill Vanderlinde; she's the one who persisted in saying she thought I had AB SD and needed to see someone with the right equipment to really make the diagnosis. My GERD seems to be genetic -- my mom has very bad complications from it, and is facing her second surgery to prevent violent vomiting. I'm not at that stage yet, thank heaven!

This association of GERD and SD is certainly interesting. I've heard medical folks say that so many US adults have GERD, it would be hard to prove a strong positive correlation with any other condition. But there's no doubt in my mind that it is extra bad news for anyone with SD!

Interesting inquiry.

I had Acid Reflux several years before Ad/SD. I never went to the doctor for this but dignosed it myself just as I found out that I had SD from researching it myself. No doctor that I went to knew what I had so I went to the internet and found a voice clinic and read about the symptoms of SD. I did the same thing with my acid reflux. I now take over the counter drugs for it.

I had Acid Reflux (GERD) many years before my voice got bad. The voice problem came on gradually afterwards. I have been taking Prilosec for years, but my new health plan (Kaiser) and even my previous health plan have been trying to get me to take something else like Zantac or Protonix or others that are on there formulary list. The Prilosec has always worked well for me. I have tried all the others and they just don't help. I would even like to try the Nexium, which has a healing quality to it I understand. It's like pulling teeth to get them to prescribe something that is not on there list though. I am not giving up. I think I know whats best for me.

I had mild GERD for years. Then, after I was in a head-on car wreck in '95, in which the airbag imploded, it made the GERD worse. I could feel the stomach acid come into my throat at times. Awful.

Technically I did have GERD prior to S.D., with S.D. symptoms immediately after the car wreck. It turned out that I had internal injuries that made GERD worse; definitely contributing to hoarseness, coughing, choking, and more. I had many scopes of the throat/vocal chords, showing some redness, and inflammation. Barium swallow, upper G.I. scope, and 24 hr. Ph. test all helped determine the extent of stomach acid getting into the throat. Stomach acid getting into the throat is very bad for the vocal chords...and even cause cancer, left untreated. Surgery for GERD was the best thing I ever did...and really helped my S.D., too! Alas, it did not "cure" the S.D., as hoped.

Sherry, you mentioned coughing with your GERD. I have been coughing for years and used to think it was from smoking. I gave up smoking about 4 years ago and still cough. Am wondering how many others have a constant cough?

Doris, it was not just constant, unproductive coughing... but also I had a need to clear my throat all the time... and the choking part was the worst. Eating, even taking a shower and getting water in my mouth, could put me in a terrible choking episode. Very scary!

Ouch, that would be scarry!! So it was mostly the choking episodes that would make you cough. I guess I can identify with that but only when I would have the acid reflux come up into my throat. I would go from gasping for breath to coughing alot once I caught it.

I'm AD, and my reflux came first. Diagnosed just over a year ago, and the SD occured about 5-6 months after I started taking Prevacid to treat it. I was never aware of any reflux symptons, but an ENT that I saw regarding some frequent hoarseness said it was reflux.

I think I had AD/SD before I was diagnosed with GERD.My GERD did not

fit what I would call the classic symptoms. I felt chest pain, lump in my throat, ear pain and sore throat. The Prevacid does help some. I only discovered I had GERD in my quest for answers to my voice problem.

I had hoped that it was the entire cause for my voice. I think there must be a connection to GERD and SD. It took me 4 years to get the SD diagnosis and 3 ENT doctors later. Why don't ENT doctors as a rule know the classic symptoms of SD? I had to search for answers myself and then find the doctors at Loyola in Maywood, IL who are specialist with SD.

One more thing is that my 1st ENT doctor found nothing wrong with me!

Here I have GERD, AD/SD an he says there is nothing wrong. This is a very frustrating type of disorder to have. I am afraid to try the Botox at this time and hope for some other forms of treatment.I am always clearing my throat and I have a slight cough. I have read that you should go off acid reducing meds every 10 days or so to prevent ulcers from forming in the stomach. With out acids the stomach can harbor some bad things. Any other opinions on that? This whole disorder has really freaked me out as I was only diagnosed with SD 3 weeks ago.

I'm late in replying to this post, but I'll add my two cents for posterity. :-)

I had minor problems with heartburn before the SD started. I believe real GERD symptoms started after SD. At the time of SD diagnosis, I was also diagnosed with "severe" reflux (did not have heartburn symptom at that time.) I take Protonix, and at my last Botox injection the reflux diagnosis was reduced to "moderate."

I wish you well, Robin (AB, So. Calif.)
