The Helium Balloon Experiment!

LOL...This may seem like a weird topic, but it does have to do with SD, if in an abstract way.

The other day, I was in a restaurant that gave out helium-filled balloons. Hmm, I thought...I remembered as a kid taking a breath from one, and the helium made my voice sound like a chipmunk! (I'll bet a lot of you tried this at one time). Anyway I read that the helium relaxes your vocal cords, and wondered what it would do to my AB SD voice.

So, when I got home, I tried it. Lo and behold, it eased my spasms! HOWEVER, it didn't get rid of all the breaks...but it made my voice less breathy with less effort to speak. Within about 10 seconds, the effect wore off, and I was back to my regular breathy voice. I tried it a couple more times and got the same results. I had a friend with me, and he agreed there was a temporary improvement...well, if you could call a less breathy chipmunk voice an improvement! It was a fun and interesting experiment.

Has there been any research done with helium and SD? Of course you can't go around using balloons, but it's another insight into how the voice works.

The only reference to the use of Helium in regard to voice disorders that I've heard of is the use of a mixture of helium and oxygen in the treatment of vocal cord dysfunction. (which is of course, not the same as SD, but.... I thought it might be relevant anyways.)

Kim, whose decided today that she almost prefers the spasms to the pain of twisted and knotted muscles. That is, I wish my muscles would just spasm and quit getting stuck in the tying themselves in knots in the most painful ways imaginable stage the way they have since yesterday.

Kim, is it your vocal cord muscles that are knotted, or other muscles? My cords seem to sometimes get stuck and have pain.
