Any other hairdressers with AD/SD out there?

I have had voice problems since the fall of 1987, and was just diagnosed with AD/SD in August of 2002. I have been a hairdresser since 1983. Of course didn't know what was wrong with my voice then but read something several years ago about a nail technician that had a voice problem that sounded like what is now known as AD/SD. The nail dust she breathed in was supposed to have caused her problems. They say now that it is neurological, but I wonder if some of the fumes we breath in could also trigger it.

Jana,

Welcome to the SD Bulletin Board. You came to the right place. I'm glad you have asked this question. The hairdresser *issues* we have dealt with here in the past have to do with the amount of noise (lots of people talking and loud blow-dryers) that we SD'ers could not talk over. Many of us could relate to that.

Please tell us where you are located (in your sign-off, as below) and I hope you have been diagnosed by an otolaryngologeal professional (or team of ENT, speech pathologists and neurologists) experienced with SD. SD is very difficult to diagnose, unless your case demonstrates the classic symptoms. However, if you do have AD/SD, you can move on productively from there.

Fumes are not good for any of us. You brought up a new hairdresser issue.

There is no one cause of SD but toxic fumes are mentioned regularly as a possible trigger, as is major emotional trauma, etc. Things that might affect the basal ganglia of the brain. Many cases also present some genetic pre-disposition however. (Example: my family is full of neurological things BUT I've also lived within 20 miles of eight oil refineries for the past three decades). Who ever knows exactly what the cause of any one case is but it is good to pose the questions you have posed.

Stick with this BB for awareness and knowledge on analyzing your own case and getting an appropriate treatment. Also, do you have a support group in your area? They are very beneficial in working through questions and issues and developing coping skills.

Best of luck, Jana...and thanks for asking. Very good question!

Lynne,

Thank you for the info. I was diagnosed with AD/SD back in Aug. of this year and had first injection on Aug. 23, 2002. So it has been close to two months. I saw a laryngologist who luckily specializes in voice problems. Before that there was no one to treat this or who even knew what it was. I live in WV and this doctor is in my hometown of Huntington. I believe there are only two in WV listed who deal with this problem. Before finding out what was wrong with my voice (problem I have had for quite some time) I wondered if it was from severe nausea from pregnancy and the vomiting from that or the fumes that we hairdressers breathe. I wish they could find a direct trigger for this. Voice is doing better though I think will need higher dosage next time. Jana Nicholas

Jana, I also wondered if my work place was the cause of my SD. My company has moved into a new office bldg. with all new furniture and the air was very dry. There was also a new plant attached to the office by swinging doors. In the plant they used various chemicals, such as acetone, etc. When I started having problems in 1987, it was worse at work. I went out on sick leave six months after the onset of SD and it took me a year and a half to be diagnosed and begin BoTox injections. Most of my injections were done at Vanderbilt Medical Center in Nashville, Tn. I highly recommend it and their staff of doctors. They give injections of BoTox every Fri. and sometimes more often.

We have a large support group in Charlotte, NC and we have done a background study on each person trying to discover if any of us have anything in common that may have triggered SD. We haven't come up with anything but I do know that chemicals make it much worse.
