I was wondering how many of you out there identify as "Black" or "African American", etc. This BB seems to be "Whiter" than the general society. I have only known one such patient in all my years of SD experience. Why??

I'm not sure how to determine how "white" a BB is, but your query is interesting. I'll be looking for replies on this BB to your questions. Larry ADSD

We have African Americans attend our support group. I don't know the percentage of how many black people versus how many white have SD. I never thought of it that way. We are all supporting people with the same problem whether they are poor, rich, white, black, young or old, etc. I correspond with people all over the U.S. since I am the Southeast Regional Coordinator for the National Spasmonic Dyphonia Assoc. Maybe NSDA could tell you what percentage is on there membership list if they keep it that way. I don't remember ever having been asked that question. Let us know if you find an answer.

Hello,

Actually, I read through this message board from time to time and I was wondering the same thing. I am an African-American female with SD. I first noticed a problem with my voice at the age of 12 but was not diagnosed until 1996 at the age of 24 by Dr. Gerald Berke at UCLA. Needless to say my life has been challenging for all these years. Actually, I made SD somewhat of the focus of my personal statement on my applications to graduate and law school. Not only have I wondered if there were any other Black male or females with SD, but those who encountered SD at an early age no matter what their race, like I did. I love this message board because when I do have those "tough" days, I take a break from my work and log onto this message board and read through different posts which helps me get through the day. I would LOVE to connect with others with SD, especially black females who are struggling with this disorder. And, I personally wrote to Oprah on her website myself and asked her to focus on SD specifically on an upcoming show. I would think that she would be interested in something else that potentially affects professional African-American women that could possibly have this disorder and not be able to put a name to it.

Anissa,

There are several black women with SD who attend the Washington, DC support group. I'll take a copy of your post to our next meeting (which is tonight) and ask if anyone is interested in corresponding with you.

Anissa,

I'm not an African American but am in California and know other SD'ers in Northern California who are African American. They read the BB so I hope they have been in touch with you.

Your previous message on this thread was completely engaging. I think anyone could relate to it, beyond race or gender. I sure do. Stay in touch, OK?

--Lynne (AD/SD; Northern California)
