Hi,everybody! I'm an ab/sd,going for my 2nd shot Thurs 12-12.He is going to put me to sleep so he can reach the back muscle better. I was just curious to know if other AB people here have been put to sleep for an injection. It seems like a little much but I'm so desperate at this point,I'm going along with it! Just have a hard time believing I'm going to have to be put to sleep everytime I get injected! Please share your thoughts & feelings & wish me luck Thurs! I'll let you know how it goes! Thanks! Mitch, I received several injections for AB/SD and each one was a struggle. My physician refused to alter my consciousness, (I did ask), and I do not remember why. Maybe you could check out whether or not this is safe by asking another doctor. Does your physician have experience with AB type injections? |

I know of a man with AB/SD who was put to sleep when he got his last Botox injection. He got good results from this procedure and was using the telephone without any problem. The people who he called did not recognize him. Years ago he tried Botox for his AB/SD without being put to sleep and he did not get any benefit. I have heard about another person from California who is put to sleep when she get her Botox for AB/SD. |

I just got my second shot for AB/SD and it was done without my being put to sleep. This time it was painful, but just for a few seconds. I was hoping that I could be treated in Boston (which is about 1 1/2 hrs. away) but at Mass Eye and Ear they recommended I go to New York. So I take the train (over 3 hrs.) into New York City to go to Dr. Blitzer who's very skillful at PCA injections. Because PCA injections are tricky, I think that you may have to choose between traveling to someone who can do it while you're awake or getting it done closer and being put to sleep. I'd also like to hear from other AB/SDers about this. Estelle

Hi Sarah, They are injections into the PCA muscle (posterior cricoarytenoid muscle) - the muscle responsible for the inappropriate breathy spasms in ABductor SD. Dr. Thomas has more information on what to expect from a botox injection into the PCA at his website. Best wishes from a neighbour :-) Lloyd Pearson(BC) Canada AD/SD Related link: http://www.voicedoctor.net/therapy/sd/ab.html |

Hey Mitch, I'm also from Oklahoma. I live in a small town down by Lawton so I travel to the city to get my Botox shots for AB/SD. I have now had three injections, none of which have been successful. I know the last one took, because I had no voice for 2 weeks and I could just tell that this time he hit the bulls-eye. I was just wondering if we were using the same doctor? I'm a second grade teacher so I rely on my voice daily and some days are very frustrating and tiresome. I sure am hopeful that there becomes something else availiable rather than just Botox. I really don't know whether to continue shots or not. Best of Luck with yours. R.Coast |

Mitch, Hey! My doctor is Dr. Clark. I hope you get some luck with your shots. I live in Marlow. I'm a 2nd grade teacher and have just recently been diagnosed. I am luck I just have a very mild case and sure hope it doesn't get worse. Some days are really a struggle dealing with little ones. I really do feel my SD was kick-off by voice abuse, not that I'm a yeller! You know how it goes, when you teach little ones you use your voice from the time you get there until the time you leave. I have a microphone this year and it has been a life saver. My kids think it's cool. I'm not so fond of it, it's in the way quite often. I still would like to consider some type of surgery, I can't imagine dealing with this for the rest of my life. Rhonda |

Hey, I e-mailed you, but my post never came up. I use Dr. Clark as well. I have been disappointed in the results of the shots. I have just a very mild dystonia, but it certainly drives me crazy. It just takes so much more effort than before to speak. After I talk all day with my 2nd graders I'm exhausted! I do have a microphone and it has been a life saver this year. I teach over by Lawton. I strongly feel that using my voice for 16 years teaching has caused this trouble. I have never been a loud spoken person. I'm always affraid my parents ( of my sutdents ) will think that I lost my voice because I holler. Hope you have some good results with your injections. I would still like to consider some type of surgery. Let me know how things go. R.Coast |

I just had my second shot, today, Dec. 17th, 2002. My first shots of botox was last May, 21st, 2002. I received 2.5 in each side. I was breathy for 4-5 weeks, I mean, I could barely whisper. Then by July 4th or so I got a so-so voice, maybe 40-60% of my normal voice, then by Sept. 4th, about 2 months later, my voice was back to almost 0%. or back to the old broken up bad cell phone signal sound. lol . I tried acupuncture, massage, and chiropractic, during the past months of Sept., Oct., and Nov. Nothing worked or even helped a little bit. I proceeded back to my Doctor in Boston, Ma. this morning. I explained my issues about the long breathiness, and the fact I never even got close to a normal voice the first time around.I explained to him that I was concerned about if I could have messed the injection up by swallowing during the procedure. He did say its VERY important to try not to swallow, which I said I'll try my hardest not to. We agreed on trying something different, injecting just 2.0 per side, instead of 2.5 per side. Also, My Doctor injected an area a little higher up on my neck than last time, and injected a little shallower. I focused real hard on NOT swallowing by staring at the ceiling and breathing kind of heavy through my nose, and I feel he had better results already. Last May, on the way home, I almost choked just trying to drink something. Today, so far , no problems at all, its about 9:00 pm about 11 hours later, and I feel great. I just wanted to post my experience, and to remind people about the importance of NOT swallowing. I found that to be very difficult. Anyway, enough babbling, I'm hoping for a voice again, and a mild breathy period. Wish me luck, and I hope and pray for all of you to continue on learning, encouraging others, and keeping the faith. I've had SP for over 3 1/2 years now, and I have my moments when it just gets to me, having this (voice issue/problem). BUT, I won't give up, and I know there are lots of folks out there who have far more serious health issues than I , so may GOD BLESS you all, have a great and safe holiday. Chris Moore |

Hi Chris! Funny that we both are going through this almost simultaneously. I hade my first Botox shot in April 2002 and my second one Dec. 12th 2002. After the first shot I had practically no breathiness, after the second one I continue to be out of breath. Do you know why should you not swallow during the procedure? How does swallowing bring this breathiness to come about? My docs did not explain this to me. Silta |

The breathiness is a result of the Botox itself - not any swallowing that might occur. The requirement to avoid swallowing during a Botox injection is purely to make it easier for the doctor to place the needle in the right place - it is easier to hit a stationary target than a moving one. A good way of preventing swallowing is to place something like a popsicle stick horizontally across the mouth during the procedure. David Barton (AD/SD, Auckland, NZ) |

Well, thank you David, and Eileen, for the replys. Today is Friday, Dec. 20th, about 6:00pm. Its been a little over 3 days since my second shot. This time , I've had hardly any breathiness, didn't lose my voice,(The very little voice I have) , everything almost the same still. So, I'm hoping that something good is going to come out of this, but I'm growing skeptical . If you read my posts above from earlier this week, I talked about how my first shot never worked well. This time my Dr. tried some different approaches, and I'm sitting here on a Friday night wondering if theres NO breathiness, then maybe no results again? I'll let you all know next week. Keep the faith, Merry Christmas to you all. May GOD BLESS us all, Chris Moore |

Hi Silta, When you swallow, it moves the muscles that the doctor is trying to inject; it makes it harder for the Doctor to pin point the spot that he is trying to inject. I think the doctor could make a mistake and put the injection in the wrong place. The swallowing doesn't cause the breathiness; the botox causes the breathiness. I also have breathiness, and this time I'm having trouble swallowing food. Almost choked today.

Hi Eileen, Thank you for your answer. I'm too having trouble swallowing, though not so much with food but instead with drink. Seems to go sometimes in the wrong pipe if drank in my usual quick and careless fashion. You wrote about being skeptical about going through another injection. Have you had several shots, or only few? I've been reading the older posts here and it seems that all of this nonsense, that is these side-effects are well worth the end result. The plus here is that I don't have any spasms. In a funny way this breathiness has been a good lesson with me. In pre-Botox I don't gasp for air as much as I probably should while speaking. Now I have to breath alot in order to be able to say a sentence. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you all. Silta ad/sd

Silta, I have trouble swallowing drinks, too. Fairly regularly I "take it down the wrong pipe" and start coughing, which is pretty embarassing depending on whom I'm around. I definitely have to be more careful. And I have heard that tipping your head down helps - sometimes I remember to do this and it does help me. Merry Christmas, Bill

I had a shot 9/17 and my second on 12/17. I've had SD since 1996. Went through physical therapy for spasmodic torticollis (similar:spasm of the neck muscle; my head pulls to the left) then speech therapy, the neurologist sent me for an MRI to rule out MS; really wasted a lot of time until finally this Summer went to an ENT doc in Boston and he suggested Botox. It is a miracle that my speech gets smoother, but the breathiness and the swallowing: I don't know, I'll probably keep doing the botox. Merry Christmas
