Greetings and Happy Holidays to all!

Can anyone recommend a high quality personal voice amplifier? I am a business consultant and facilitator, and work with groups of 10 to 35 adults. I had my first botox shot last week and my voice is still soft and breathy. Any help would be most appreciated!

Regards,

Lynn SD-AD

Hi Lynn,

A number of people have posted to the bulletin board about how useful voice amplifiers can be. The Chattervox is very popular, as is the PA-3 from Lightspeed. Both are about the size of a "fanny pack" and can be worn like a belt. The Voicette from Luminaud is a bit larger but has very good sound quality. The moderators do not allow commercial links to be posted to the bulletin board, but you should be able to track down sources for any of those products on the web by doing a search with Google or some other search engine. If you have trouble let me know and I'll email the links to you.

Lynn,

Someone posted here about a small amplifier recently. I think it is about 650.00 dollars. I went to the link. Sounded very good. It is called the "Glory be".

(link to manufacturer's/retailer's website deleted as per our no-advertising policy outlined in the "Policy and Etiquette" post - if any reader is interested please email Larry Blair for it or use a search engine)

Happy Holidays to all,

Larry

Dear Larry,

Thanks so much for the info. I did read about the "Glory Be", but wasn't sure how it compared to some of the others which are much less expensive. I'll let everyone know which one I eventually decide on and why.

Happy Holidays to you too.

I use the ChatterVox when my voice is really weak. It does help. I don't have to strain to get sound out, and others don't have to struggle so hard to hear me. Of course, not everyone is comfortable with it--I had an opposing attorney tell me recently that it made me sound like Darth Vader. By the way, he's a really decent guy and a gentleman as an adversary, so I don't think he meant to be unkind--I think he just didn't know how to react to the ChatterVox. (Besides, my fantasy is that it makes me sound like James Bond, but I've not yet received confirmation about that from Halle Berry.) Hope your search for the right product is fruitful. Best wishes of the season, Larry ADSD, New Orleans

Dear Larry,

Thanks for letting me know about your experience with the ChatterVox - it is one that I am considering. Last week while facilitating a seminar for 35 managers in a cavernous boardroom, I used a device called the "Voice Saver". I borrowed it from my speech pathologist. Anyway, I started the session by explaining the problem with my voice and broke the ice by singing "Happy Birthday, Mr. President" and indeed, they thought I sounded like Marilyn Monroe! So don't give up on your James Bond fantasies! Best wishes to you too. Lynn ADSD New Jersey

I forgot to mention that the ChatterVox is slightly heavy--at least for someone with back problems (which I have from time to time). The solution seems to be to keep the thing around your waist no longer than you have to--sometimes you can park it on a desk or just carry it in your hand.

Hi Everyone,

I know there are quite a few out there with a Chattervox. I have been having trouble with mine. It sounds all staticky (sp). I checked the headset because I about a year ago the mike cord had torn causing staticm and I had to replace the headset, but that doesn't seem to be the problem. My unit is a little over a year old. Do you think it could be the batteries need to be replaced? Sometimes during the day it works fine, but today it wasn't doing well at all and since I am a teacher this was a major problem.

I would appreciate any ideas. I am going to try the battery idea, but unfortunately the battery store closes today before I can get over there.

Thank, Katrina

Hi Katrina,

Long time no see and sorry to hear this. I know you need it everyday, as a teacher with AB/SD.

I've been on the Chattervox website several times recently and they seem fairly receptive. Since I recently experienced laryngeal system failure, I've been trying to not talk to anyone, except in a very quiet place.

Have you contacted Chattervox's technical support unit and asked them what the problem might be? Hopefully they can work with you. As I'm trying to get one myself, I hope their tech support can figure out what was wrong with your unit and be supportive of all their customers. I'm pretty much down to whispering at sporadic times lately so I need this thing but want to know if the company backs their product, before I send in my money. It shouldn't go out in just one year, unless it is the batteries. Don't batteries last longer than that? Maybe not.

Curious as to how this goes, since I'm in the decision-making process. Good luck and keep us posted.

Hi Lynne, No I haven't contacted their support. I don't want to have to send it to the company because then I won't have anything. I bought new batteries tonight and the man at the battery store said that if I use it everyday for 6 hours they could wear out in a year. They are charging now so I have my fingers crossed that the problem is the batteries. We have media specialists in my district that may be able to look at it too. I'll let you know what happens.

Katrina
