I have only been posting here for a couple of weeks, but just finished reading the above book this weekend. I have tried to research this subject on this BB, but I could not find anything. What do all of you think about this book and this method of treatment? Pat,AD/SD/Alaska

Hi Pat,

If you are referring to a book called "Spasmodic Dysphonia: The Unspoken Voice Disorder" by Tom Johnson (not sure, based on your message), it appears to be one patient's description of his personal experiences with the Direct Voice Rehabilitation (DVR) method developed by Morton Cooper, PhD.

If I'm incorrect on this, please let me know.

There has been much information on this BB over the years regarding Morton Cooper's techniques. A SEARCH of current pages and the archives (going out a year or so) and typing in "DVR" or "Cooper" would probably lead you to source information related to this book.

Other excellent books by SD patients, about their experiences dealing with our disorder, are: "Speechless" by Dot Sowerby and "The Voice Gallery: Travels with a Glass Throat" by Keath Fraser. Ms. Sowerby is the current President of the NSDA and a long-time volunteer advocate on behalf of SD patients. Mr. Fraser is a Canadian author, who was a respected writer well prior to his SD case. I'm reading his book now. Quite an interesting road-trip. They are both scheduled to be at the SD symposium in Washington DC (March 8th).

I read several of Cooper's books around 10 years ago but never heard of the one you mentioned until your post. Hope this information helps your BB research.
