I saw Dr. Robert Bastian and Loyola Voice Institute for my first Botox injection today. I cannot tell you how pleased I was with his professional manner and knowlege. I have learned much about SD over the past 17 months, but he is a real teaching physician and had a lot more information to share with me. He has made a 20-minute video that he shows to patients in his office regarding the different forms of this disorder and the treatment options. He told me I have a "substantial" ABSD case-- 6 or 7 on a scale of 1-7. He also said that although he has performed surgeries on some SD patients, he is not a strong proponent of treating this neurological disorder with a surgical procedure. I know some physicians differ and some of you have had good results from surgeries, but to me this made sense. He gave me a bi-lateral injection and said he would start with a low dose, but unfortunately I forgot to ask him specifically what the dose was. I am to call his nurse on Thursday for a "telephone evaluation" of my voice at that point. That is when he said I should start noticing the difference if the injection was effective. He did explain that the improvement is often not as dramatic in abductors. For those of you who may be contemplating Botox, I would say it was a little more uncomfortable than going to the dentist. The discomfort for me lasted about 30 min. until the local anesthesia wore off. Dr. Bastian uses a different approach to inject the PCA muscle in AB's in that he goes directly through the cartilege. This may be more uncomfortable but I'm not sure since I have never had it another way. The support and knowlege I have gained from others on this bb is incredible. To those of you who e-mailed me with your encouragement, it was SO MUCH appreciated! If I can be of any help to any of you please feel free to e-mail me. I will post an update when I see what my results are. Waiting in anticipation for a better voice---- Vici (ABSD Illinois) |

Hi Vici, Congratulations! Also, thanks for the confirming feedback, regarding what we've posted here on this BB over the years, regarding Dr. Bastian. The "reviews" on Dr. Bastian from both his patients and those of us who have met him at symposiums are continually and consistently at the top of the spectrum. The NSDA is very fortunate to have him as a Medical Advisor to the organization. Best of luck on the results of your first shot and....*SEE!!*...150 miles wasn't that far, right? LOL. Let us know how you progress. --Lynne (AD/SD; Northern California) |

Keep it posted as to how the botox works out. I too have AB and have very good luck. The first injection took a few weeks and it seems like over the past 2 years my voice has gotten stronger with each injection. Best of luck, Katrina AB in Tucson |

Glad to hear you decided to go through with the shot! See, it wasn't all that bad, lol...Definitely keep us all posted on your results. Since we talked on the phone recently, and found our voices are so similar, I'm particularly interested in how your Botox works. Hopefully you get some great results. --fancynancy==

This is my 3rd day post-bilateral Botox injection for ABSD. My voice is stronger than it's been in over a year. I still have the tremor (as Botox doesn't treat the tremor), it still seems to be effortful to speak, and I'm quite short of breath when talking. I spoke with Dr. Bastian's nurse on the phone today and she says the shortness of breath should not last longer than a week to 10 days, but that my improved voice should last 3-4 months. I am optimistic that it worked so well the first time! I have always been rather sensitive to medicine (doesn't take much to give me the desired effect) so maybe a lower dose next time will reduce the shortness of breath. I'll just have to see how it goes. Vici -- ABSD w/tremor, Illinois |

Hi Vici, I'm so glad that you are having such good effect with the first shot! I think I can speak for all of us on the b.b. that when of our SD friends rejoices we all rejoice! I know Dr. Bastian is quiet good at getting the shots right and achieving the most “bang for the buck.” I had a unilateral shot on the 6th and it's still an effort to speak but not so much as when I was getting the bilateral shots. I started with relatively high doses but found that those amounts were way too much. Dr. B. lowered my bilateral dose down to .2 units and the bilateral amount to 1. unit. Others have mentioned that they receive 10. units! I wouldn’t be able to speak for a year. Another perfect example how different we are and how we react to Botox. Best of luck and you continue on your journey. Peace,

I recieved 10 units on each side the last injection and got no result. After ten years of injections, I have become immune to Botox. How I miss the breathy-ness. Hope they discuss this at the symposium. I can't be the only one that has become immune to Botox A and Myobloc. If there are others and you are going to the symposium please bring this up. Hoping for a new strain of Botox. Ida AD/SD 25 yrs. |

Hi Vici ,I too have absd but unfortunately for my absd I live in the southernmost city (Key west Fl.) Anyway I need to find another Doctor as mine right now is in Miami and after just 3 botox shots is talking about surgery. Sorry but I think not, thank god for this b.b. and all the people that post and help others. So any way my question is how bad is you voice and why did you wait so long to try botox. Im going to be making another post about other Doctors that might be good with absd .your Doctor sounds very good. Because of where I live it really doesn’t matter to much what city its in when you have fly. Good luck with your shots and keep us posted. P.S. 150 miles not so far at all.( lol) |

Hi Raymond! In answer to your questions, my voice was pretty bad. Dr. Bastian said on a scale of 1-7 (7 being worst) I was a 6 or 7. Now my voice is not totally normal but it's probably 85% better than it was! The reason I hadn't tried botox before is that up until recently I hadn't heard of very much success with botox for absd. I'll e-mail you more specifics. Living in Key West Florida doesn't sound all that bad today. It was 7 degrees here this morning. (lol) Are you having success with botox now? |

It's been one week today since my first Botox injection for ABSD. When I posted last week I didn't know the dosage. It was .85 units on each side. My voice is still much better than it was before the injections. I've found that it's still better in the morning than at night. It's awesome to be able to go into a store and ask for something or talk to the cashier! The shortness of breath has leveled off. I notice it when talking or exercising but it's not intolerable. The thing that is puzzling to me is that I still feel the spasms so intensely. I would have thought those would have lessened. They are as bad or worse than before. Has anyone else had that experience? Vici ABSD w/tremor Illinois

Well DONE! but I am curious what do you mean by feeling "Spasms" could you elaborate. I don't feel any spasms, when I talk at all. What has happened over the past year is no voice quality at all, NOTHING. I have to push it out, therefore if I have to talk for any long periods of time I can't do it. (I know that is volume issue) Recently I have experienced tremors, which makes someone think I am about to burst into tears. What I have still experienced is feeling that something is caught in my throat. Also when I eat certain things I will choke.. Does any have that still going on after a year or so? An please enlighten me about the spasms, thanks Jean Phelps, AB/SD in Virginia. |
