I just registered with the SDBB. I've been having problems with my throat for about 7 years, came out of the blue. I also have Fibromyalgia. Does anyone know if the 2 are connected since FMS does affect muscles? Mary Piccione |

Hello Mary, and welcome to the NSDA BB. I personally have never heard of a connection between SD (which is the resulting voice from the disorder technically known as laryngeal dystonia) and fibromyalgia. Like many conditions, I suppose they can co-exist but that doesn't mean one causes the other. SD is a neurological movement disorder. When you say 'problems with your throat' do you actually mean with your voice? SD is a complex disorder, but a typical case only manifests itself when speaking, so under medical examination when the vocal cords are at rest your throat would appear normal. Best wishes David Barton (AD/SD, Auckland, NZ) |

Sorry, yes I did mean my voice. My last episode lasted from Christmas Day to Jan 18. I was hoarse 24/7. Then it was gone and I've had my normal speaking voice. Figured it was the holidays since when I do get nervous, stressed it always comes on. I was diagnosed SD by an ENT specialist several years back. And, about that same time also diagnosed with FMS. SD and FMS do seem similar. Not enough is known about FMS, but it is REAL!!! Mary |
