I've been coming to this BB for about a month now and just got up the courage to post. I was diagnosed with SD in Oct. 2002 but have known something was wrong with my voice for 5 years. I first found out about SD about a year ago when I was searching the net trying to figure out what was wrong with my voice. I read the symptoms and knew this is what I had. I didn't go to the Doctor until October 2002 though mostly out of fear. I finally went because of my mother's urging. My voice was getting progressively worse and she was genuinely concerned. I have been real fortunate in that the ENT I went to knew what I had right away, without me even mentioning I thought I had it. He called it Spastic Dysphonia but I knew what he was talking about. I just finished speech therapy about a week ago, it didn't help. The SLP I went to has worked with others with this disorder and she confirmed what the ENT diagnosed me with. She says I have the Adductor form and is recommending Botox. I'm still a little nervous about the whole idea of Botox but I'm also excited! I guess I just needed to open up and share my story.

Tonya,

You're story sounds very similar to mine. I too was diagnosed in October 2002. I had my first botox shot Dec. 12th. After 3 weeks of a breathy voice...my voice came back. It's been great!! I wish you the best of luck. Keep us posted on your progress!

Cheryl

Hi Tonya,

I'm so glad you've posted! Welcome. I “joined” the bb just about the same time you were diagnosed. I think you will find a lot of support and information posted here (I know I have). I have AD/SD too and am on my 14th shot. It’s not a pleasant experience but it's very “do-able” even for needle wimps like me. Everybody is different but most that have gone through the procedure will repeat it over and over again. So, it can’t be that bad right? Besides, we're right here for you. Keep writing and best of luck.

Peace,

Bill

Tonya, I am sorry to hear you have SD but I am glad you have finally been diagnosed and can look forward to treatment. Welcome to the BB. There is a wealth of knowledge on this system. I wish it had been available in 1987 when I started my voice problem. The Adductor type is easier to treat so that is in your favor. I know you are nervous about the first injection of BoTox but it only takes a few minutes. I kept a diary of my injections - date, amount, breathyness and how quickly it worked. This is one problem where you can be a big help to the doctor on the amount to be injected and also how often you want it injected. Of course, your doctor may have to experiment with a few injections to arrive at the amount you require to give you a better voice. My injections varied from 5 units to .625 units in each cord.

If I can be of further help, please e-mail me directly.

Hi Tonya,

Welcome! I am also fairly new to this bulletin board, but have found it to be of great help and support since my ADSD diagnosis in September of 2002. I am an elementary teacher and depend on a functioning voice every day, so when botox was recommended as a treatment I didn't hesitate with my decision.

Like you, I was nervous about my first treatment, but tried to think of all the benefits/relief that it would hopefully provide. I've been told that I don't deal well with pain - had gall bladder surgery in December and heard I was a tough patient! - so I feel that if I can handle these injections, anyone can! I know from reading posts on this bulletin board, there have been different degrees of discomfort, but I have found the injections to be very tolerable, especially if an anesthetic is injected first.

I have also been fortunate enough to have been referred to an awesome doctor (Dr. Bastian) through posts from this bulletin board. It is a good idea to see a doctor who has considerable experience with these treatments. When it's time for your injection, make sure to ask what dosage you are getting - you should have some input in this area. Doctors have different theories as to where to start for the first treatment, but from personal experience - especially if you need to get back to a voice demanding job quickly - starting low and working up from there may be a good choice.

Having only dealt with this disorder (officially) for a few months, I am by no means an expert. Just thought I'd share my experience so far and give you some encouragement. Good luck with your first treatment!

Jenni, ADSD
